KELSEY is a classic black and tan GSD beauty!  And a youngster.  And a girl who tragically lived on the end of a chain for her entire first year of life.

She was confiscated by animal control after she was found with a serious leg injury.  As a chained dog, she had gotten the chain wrapped around her back leg -- and it had pulled so tightl that all the circulation to her lower leg was cut off.  Her foot and lower leg were more than 3 times normal size.  She had a gaping wound where the chain had been wrapped around her leg.  She was, in short, a mess.

At first it appeared her leg would have to come off.  But fate stepped in = in the form of a packed surgeon's schedule that forced the amputation to delayed for over a week.  And in that week, Kelsey suddenly began to lower her foot, which she'd been holding in the air.  By Day 10 she was putting a tiny bit of weight on it.  The swelling started to go down.  She gradually put more and more weight on it.  By the end of Week 3, she was putting nearly full weight on her foot.  Her wound was still horrendous and required daily bandage changes, but she kept her leg!  Rejoicing all around!

During her time in the vet clinic she quickly beame the staff favorite.  The reason?  So easy to get along with, so sweet.  She stood completely still and relaxed during her daily treatments - a miracle for any GSD youngster!  She never complained.  She didn't cause trouble in her kennel run.  She behaved beautifully in the clnic for over a month!  Outside was a slightly different story - she wanted to take off and run but settled for straining at her leash.  So she's a typical energetic GSD youngster who also happened to know, somehow, that the clinic staff were helping her and she needed to be good.  Amazing little girl!

OTHER DOGS / CATS:  Due to her injury, it's been impossible to dog test or cat test her.  She has shown a lot of interest in cats on her daily walks, but since she's never been on a leash before, never had any freedom before, etc, it's impossible to tell if this is just an initial reaction or her true reaction.  True testing with both dogs and cats will have to wait until her leg is completely healed.

PEOPLE:  she doesn't seem to know a stranger.  And she LOVES attention! We suspect she's a secret cuddlebug.

OVERALL:  Someone is going to hit the jackpot with this little girl!  She's sweet, loving, and grateful to be safe and loved.  Are YOU the fortunate family to share your life with her?  Cuddle with her?  Love her?  Get her kisses?  Apply now!

DOGS:                  Unknown, would have to be tested
CATS:                   Unknown, would have to be tested
KIDS:                   Unknown, would have to be tested
IDEAL FAMILY:   An active family with the time and desire to exercise her daily in ways that stimulate her both mentally and physically.  Strong leaders who will establish the rules, teach them to her, and help her learn how to obey them.  She's a bit of a project dog = having been a chained dog all her short life - and is "starting from scratch" so to speak.  Her family needs to understand and be good with this.

If you're looking for a gorgeous, young, trainable German Shepherd
who will love you forever,
KELSEY may be your ideal family member!

KELSEY's ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
