About Gemma | |
|
|
GEMMA had a rough start to life, living her early months as a stray on the streets of KC. Once caught she came to MOGS to find her forever home. Through no fault of her own, her family ‘rehomed’ her to an ‘owner’ who dumped her within 12 hours at a high kill shelter out of state. Fortunately for her, she had a microchip and found her way back to MOGS.
TEMPERAMENT
Gemma is a black and tan 3-year old with a plush coat and a paintbrush for a tail. Weighing in at just 55 pounds, she is a miniature version of some of MOG’s standard shepherds. Despite her rough start, this petite beauty still holds a torch for her true, forever home. Her pleasant nature is happy and content with little desire for trouble.
Gemma has had the same name for a few years now and responds to her name when called. She is attentive to human voices but still needs to practice some of her vocabulary words and general commands. Her current project is practicing her leash skills. When in a back yard or out for a potty break, she is pretty good on a leash. When out for a walk or on the streets, she doesn’t always seem to realize that she is wearing a leash. She is working diligently to learn the skills needed to find a loving forever home.
This girl kennels easily and hasn’t shown destructive tendencies but sometimes jumps when she is excited. She enjoys tossing her rope pull around but hasn’t shown much toy or food motivation. She is more than happy to follow her people around the house and keep them company. She is perceptive and smart. When her humans settle down to an activity or meal, she will lay down near them and wait. She will also walk right into the shower when called and stand still for a gentle bath in warm water. In fact, when she arrived in her foster home she almost seemed relieved to have the shelter stink washed off her plush coat.
OTHER ANIMALS
Gemma would prefer slow introductions to new dogs, but has successfully lived in a home with a small dog for 2 years. She ignores cats and will even run away from them if they are in a bad mood. She has not shown any signs of food or toy possessiveness.
She tried barking at a fence to the neighbor dogs but called off with one shout and stayed away from the fence line until the neighbor dogs went inside.
CHILDREN
Gemma enjoys her interactions with children, but can sometimes be a little bouncy. She doesn't spook easily, doesn't mind being poked and bothered, and seems generally happy. Gemma would do well in a home with children over the age of 5.
MEDICAL
Gemma has some mild seasonal allergies that require attention during the spring and summer.
