SAYLOR is a sweetheart who's had a rough time!  She was owned by a young man who lived at home, threw Saylor and another dog in the backyard, ignored them, then moved out and left the dogs behind.  His mother didn't want either and took both to a shelter, where they were put in separate kennels.  Saylor was so terrified she curled up in a ball at the very back of her kennel and wouldn't move.  She was terrified of all people.  She was also very skinny and stopped eating all together.  The shelter didn't feel she was adoptable and asked us to step in.  We did.  And when we met her, she broke our hearts.

But that was then, and this is now -- and Saylor is a different young lady!  After several months with a wonderful foster mom and doggie buddy, she's doing well and is coming out of her shell.  She follows her foster doggy sister like a shadow and does everything she does.  She's loving and adores her humans.  She bonds completely with you and is the very definition of "I'll love you forever."

TEMPERAMENT:   Saylor is very loving and friendly, and will thrive in a quieter home without a lot of noise.  While she's done well with kids during events such as the Home Shows where both kids and dogs are completely controlled., she would not do well in a 24/7 environment of high-energy, noisy, fast-moving small kids.  She doesn't like a lot of noise and scares pretty easily.  She needs a leader who's very attentive, observant and can read her body language to tell when she's uncomfortable.  The good news about Saylor is she does back away when she's afraid.  Her forever family must be one who will help her build up her confidence level.  Due to some of her fears, we are requiring a securely fenced yard (6 ft fence stronglly preferred) in her forever home.

TRAINING:
She's very smart and is doing well with her training.  She has an amazing focus on her person and becomes extremely attached.  Such a delight!  She does a fantastic job with the command "Wait" -- she waits for her food, at the door, for treats, and more.  She's also house trained and kennel trained.  She's very eager to please her humans.  But like a typical German Shepherd, she does have a bit of a stubborn side -- so you still need to be a good canine leader!

OTHER DOGS:
SAYLOR MUST HAVE ANOTHER DOG OF ROUGHLY HER OWN ENERGY LEVEL TO LIVE WITH IN THE HOME - this is a requirement.  At first Saylor was jelaous of the resident dog in the home -- didn't like the other dog getting near her foster mom -- but she gradually came to realize the dog was her buddy.  Now she literally "shadows" her foster sister. She follows her buddy everywhere, mimics her foster sister, does everything she does, and is lost when her foster sister isn't around.  And because she mimics everything the other dog does, she needs another dog with pretty good behavior and habits!  Her new doggie buddy needs to be roughly her energy level, and a reasonable size for her to play with.

MEDICAL:   Background - Due to her crummy start and being forced to live outside from a young puppy, Saylor came to us with several health problems:  leaky eyes, severe underweight, unaltered, poor coat.  At first we thought she was just in need of good nutrition and care.  But after several weeks of not eating combined with potty accidents, we took her to the vet.  She was spayed and we found our she had been pregnant when we got her but lost the litter!  Some blood in her urine was from her body beginning to abort them.  We were so sad for her and the tiny lives that never had a chance.  She has since come back to excellent health, eats well, and her tummy has setllted down. Current - The only thing left is leaky eyes.  We took her to a canine eye specialist, who told us it may be an issue where her body is still healing, and it may take time.  She's currently on eye drops, and is improving well.  The eye speciallist believes she will eventually grow out of the condition, but it's possible she may require eye drops for some time.

Saylor is truly a gem -- and will make an amazing companion for the right family!

DOGS:     Yes, MUST HAVE A DOGGIE BUDDY.  Should be approximately her own energy level and of a size sufficient to horse around with.  MAY REQUIRE GRADUAL INTRODUCTIONS AT FIRST - will likely be confused and need your leadership to understand that hse doesn't have to compete with the other dog for your attention.  Small dogs are unknown - she was tested with two large dogs and wanted to play, but for the first part of the meeting was over-the-top reactive, finally settling after 30 minutes.
CATS:      Trainable, but it will take some work to get her to live with cats.
KIDS:       Older kids only, ages 10 and up.  Altho she does well with small kids in a controlled environment where the kids are completely supervised (such as the Home Show) she would not do well with chaos and loud noise.  She retreats to her kennel and shakes.  Even older kids must be WELL-BEHAVED and RESPECTFUL kids who know how to b respectful to a dog. Also, she is a big dog and like any big dog, she can easily knock over a small child in play or excitement.  She therefore MUST be completely supervised around small children at all times.
IDEAL FAMILY
:   An active family who's on the go a lot, yet has a fairly calm environment without a lot of chaos, noise, etc  She must have a securely fenced yard to play in (6 ft strongly preferred), and a doggie buddy of approximately her energy and size to play with,  mimic, and learn from.  A family who understands she's still learning that life is OK and to be enjoyed, will continue to socialize/socialize/socialize her, and constantly expose her to all kinds of new situations/people/animals.

If you're looking for a gorgeous, young, trainable furball
who will love you forever and just needs your leadership and a doggie buddy,
SAYLOR may be your heart dog!

SAYLOR's ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

Good with Dogs

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
