About Tia (in 10.15)

TIA is a gorgeous, sweet, goofy, playful, full-of-energy 5 month old German Shepherd!  She loves to play with other dogs  and needs a play buddy of roughly her own energy and size level.  She's never been taught any manners, but responds quickly to correction and plays pretty nicely.  She just needs the supervision-guidance-teaching that a young German Shepherd must have!   She's also a lover - she adores being petted and played with.   She'd be a cuddler and lapdog if allowed.

Tia was confiscated from a breeder for neglect, along with his whole family (brother and dad).  Sadly they all had to sit in the shelter for over a month while the court case was pending.  Eventually the breeder signed them over to the shelter and the entire family came into MOGS.  All of them, including Tia, were filthy, underweight and had clearly been kept outdoors running wild.  But young Tia and her brother bounced back almost immediately, and after a month of plentiful food and lots of love they're both rarin' to get on with life!

Tia is a typical GSD puppy - full of life, full of mischief, anxious to learn, and in need of structre/discipline/consistency and the training / leadership that go with it.  She's super sweet and loving, and some lucky familly is going to have one heck of a wonderful companion for life!  Is that YOU?

Tia is not yet house-trained (she and her family all lived outdoors in a pen and were neglected).  She doesn't like her crate but is slowly learning to adjust to it.  She does even better when crated next to a doggie buddy.

BEFORE YOU APPLY FOR A PUPPY:  Remember puppies are HARD WORK!  There's potty training (you'll want to scream).  There's puppy chewing (you won't believe the stuff of yours they'll destroy).  There's stealing objects off tables and the floor (those favorites shoes will soon be trash and the TV remote a goner).  There's "mouthing" (a herding behavior all GSDs naturally have that must be redirected and trained out of them).  On and on.  YOU WILL HAVE A BABY IN THE HOUSE FOR THE NEXT YEAR.  Be prepared.  Go into puppy-ownership with your eyes wide open.  Commit to raising your pup.  Commmit to enduring the frustrations as well as the joys.  Actively train and guide your baby.  Teach them how to be a great companion, a well-balanced dog, an even-tempered buddy, and the "best behaved dog on the block."  If you don't, you're putting your dog's welfare and even life at risk GSDs are a breed many people fear and they MUST be the best behaved dogs around or people will claim they're ''theatening'' - which in many cities is enough to get them classified as ''dangerous dogs''. BE SMART, BE PREPARED, BE COMMITTED.

DOGS:                  YES!  Would love a play buddy
CATS:                   Unknown.  Would have to be tested.
KIDS:                   Yes, loves people
IDEAL FAMILY:      An active family who understands Tia is a youngster who's starting from scratch and needs training, love, discipline and structure.  A family who will socialize, socialize, socialize her with other animals continuously.  A family who will spend the effort and time required to exercise her vigorously every day.  A family who will learn and exert excellent canine leadership.  Securely fenced yard strongly preferred.

If you're looking for a gorgeous "toddler" German Shepherd
who will love you forever,
TIA may be your ideal family member!

TIA's ADOPTION FEE:   $350
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save.  On average we spend over $450 on each dog.  We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then.  We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit.  At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip.  In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
