About Jade

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: 300.00
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Black
  • Current Age: 10 Years 6 Months (best estimate)

JADE is a an abolsutely stunning black German Shepherd, who's absolutely thrilled to have a second chance at loving life!

A quick snapshot of JADE:

  • Approximate weight: 80-85lbs
  • Fence needs: Requires a securely fenced yard (privacy fence preferred, 6 ft fence required)
  • Owner type: Requires an owner with extremely strong canine leadership skills!!  Must be calm, authoritative, patient, consistent, and firm.  Experience with strong-willed, energetic dogs, and GSD experience is a plus.  An active and calm owner who will commit to daily walks, lots of exercise, and regular socialization.
  • Favorite activity: Anything she can do with her people - she LOVES to be with you!
  • Activity level: Very High
  • Other animals: Medium-to-Large dogs may be do-able with good leadership and good supervision.  Small dogs and cats will need to be tested.
  • Kids: Will need to be tested (her size and rambunctiousness would be the main issue)

Gorgeous Jade was abandoned to die near Cape Girardeau MO.  Her owners got a cute puppy, played with her until she got big at 1 year old, then dumped her at a shelter to die when they moved (classic excuse).  They'd never socialized her around other animals, and as a result she became extremely reactive to other dogs at the shelter, freaking out at the mere sight of one.  At the time the shelter had 5 GSDs in need, and although the others went to rescue no one could take Jade because of her dog issues.  When we found out about her from a terrific team of people trying to save her, we consulted our trainers and they felt she could be helped.  So Jade is now a MOGS dog -- and we're thrilled to report she's doing VERY well!!

PEOPLE:  Jade absolutely loves, loves, LOVES people and will do anything to please you.  If you say "down", she can't hit the ground fast enough.  She simply adores people!  She knows a number of commands and will easily learn many more as you work with her.  She's a lover and would love to cuddle with you.

OTHER DOGS:  Jade's other-dog issues are vastly improved with the help of our incredible trainers at Gentle Dog Training.  For now she's not playing with any other dogs though eventually she might get to that point.  But as you see in the videos, she's out with some other dogs and does well.  However, bear in mind that in these videos she along with all the other dogs are CLOSELY SUPERVISED, and that is something that must be continued if she is with other dogs.  She's a typical true GSD - strong-willed with a forceful personality - and her family will need to invest time and effort in consistent training and leadership.  She's sooooo worth it -- a stunning and incredibly loving dog who just needs a family willing to expend some effort to complete her transformation with other animals.

TRAINING:  Our incredible trainers at Gentle Dog Training (Kansas City area) will provide one full year of support for Jade's new family!!!!!!  This is a huge advantage!

ENERGY:  Jade is HIGH energy!  She's not a good match for a low-key or mellow family.  She's still a puppy at just 1 yr old, and a high energy one at that.  We don't know if she comes from working lines, but it's possible.   She seems to have a high drive in at least some ways and would probably make a great agility dog or similar.  She DEFINITELY needs lots of activity, at least 1-2 hours of real exercise every single day without fail, and daily walks.

Jade is currently in training/boarding with Ken & Lisa Baechtold at Gentle Dog Training.  She's made an incredible amount of progress thanks to their leadership and training, and will need to go to a home with a consistently strong leader as well.  We have not yet seen her inside of a home, but keeping in mind she is still a young pup and will likely need at least a refresher in basic training and proper house manners.

If you're ready to put in the work for this amazing girl, we believe she'll turn into an amazing gem!

JADE's ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

More about Jade

Good with Dogs, Not Good with Cats

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
