About Addie (in 8.16)

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: 350.00
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Black with Tan, Yellow or Fawn
  • Current Age: 10 Years 5 Months (best estimate)
ADDIE is an adorable, sweet young girl who's has been passed back and forth too much in her young life.  She's ready to find that perfect "happily ever after" and settle in with her forever family!

Addie was found as a stray at just 4 months old, kept for a few months, then left at a shelter because her owners were having a baby.  S
the's initially very scared of new people, and will nip if someone tries to force themselves on her.  It appears that her owners literallly NEVER walked her or introduced her to other people.  When she was abandoned at the shelter, she was traumatized more even more and became very defensive.  However, Addie is very trainable and is slowly learning that new people actually are OK.  After some "quiet time" in which a new person ignores her, Addie usually becomes comfortable.  Her new family needs to be patient and experienced enough to help her through her adjustment period while she continues her training and trust-building.   Addie simply needs a home with a patient guardian who will make sure other people wait for her to ask for touch, will help her realize she's safe, and will socialize the heck out of her!

Except for that one issue, Addie is THE sweetest, silliest, most playful puppy!!  She LOVES, loves, loves other dogs and MUST have a play buddy.  Even the grumpy working lines GSD male in her foster home -- who takes his ball very seriously and won't it with anyone -- gladly lets her chase him and try to take his ball!  His foster family were amazed.  That's how sweet and goofy she is.  She is an enthusiastic, goofy pup who will easily leap over the edge of a bed to chase another dog or toy.  She loves to run and chase in the yard, and must have a securely fenced yard (6 ft privacy fence is strongly preferred).

Addie shares beautifully with other dogs - her toys, food, water, everything.  She'd never been in a crate before and was both terrified and freaked out by it, but now she goes in very nicely on her own and does well.  She's making great progress in the house training area, too.  Her former owners allowed her to potty in the house (we have no idea why, since they had a house with a yard!).   She still has an occasional accident indoors, but she's learning quickly.

Addie's also a cuddle bug.  If you let her, she'll climb in your lap and sleep in your bed (we don't recommend letting them on the furniture though).  When she's played out, she plops on her dog bed, rolls over and sticks all 4 feet in the air and takes a nap!

Addie was probably fed human scraps and is learning to eat dog food.  She's a "grazer" - not a big eater and one who eats a little bit and then may come back for more.  However, she's on a twice-a-day feeding schedule in her foster home and is now used to having access to food just twice a day.   She's good at self-regulating and eats only when she's hungry - so she'll probably never be a dog who gets fat as she gets older!  She still loves goodies and treats tho, and can easily be trained with those.

Like most puppies, Addie will chew on things.  She mostly chews on her toys, but is you leave shoes or similar laying around, she may decide they're hers!  But she loves Jolly balls and as long as she has access to that and some other good chew toys, it's easy to substitute those.   Like everything else her owners never taught her, she's learning this as well.

OVERALL:  Addie is an incredibly sweet, loving, goofy puppy who's having a blast having the puppyhood she never got.  She's loving, cuddly, energetic, and wide-eyed at the big wonderful world.  The only thing she needs significant help with is getting used to and trusting strangers (anyone she doesn't know).  She's already improved and will continue to improve with the right family!  She is soooooo worth the effort!  It's not often you find a dog with a soul this truly sweet!

Just one fortunate family will be blessed to have her in their lives - is that YOU?

DOGS:
YES!  MUST HAVE AT LEAST ONE DOGGIE BUDDY OF EQUAL SIZE AND ENERGY TO PLAY WITH.  She loves, loves, loves playing with other dogs and will play for hours (like a true puppy)
CATS:
              Unknown, needs to be tested
KIDS:
               Unknown, needs to be tested
IDEAL HOME:   a very active family who will take her EVERYWHERE and socialize her with people, keeping her safe and avoiding problems while she learns to trust "strangers" (i.e., anyone she doesn't know).  At least one other dog of equal size and energy as a playmate  A securely fenced yard (6 ft privacy fence strongly preferred).

ADDIE's ADOPTION FEE:   $350
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save.  On average we spend over $450 on each dog.  We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then.  We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit.  At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip.  In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

Is Not Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
