THUNDER is a goofy, loving, sweetheart of a guy who doesn't quite "get" what's happened to him. One day he was living a good life with his family, went for a ride, and ended up in an old, run-down pound. His family moved and left him at the pound. He was well cared for and was not neglected, but he doesn't understand what he "did wrong" to be abandoned.
Thunder is currently in boarding due to lack of people willing to open their homes and hearts to foster. So far in boarding he's been a love, adores affection, wants to play and comes across as a young, loveable "oaf". He's super energetic, loves to play and is super friendly. He's especially cute when he starts playing with his water bowl!
We haven't yet tested Thunder around small children and would have to do that, but we believe he will have only those issues typical with all big dogs: accidental knock-overs that result from rough play and rambunctious energy. He will require supervision around small kids for that reason - just as any large dog will.
Thunder did well when tested with two cats - curious but nothing more. If he sees cats running in an open field, he would probably give chase. But when tested in a room he was appropriate. In fact, when one cat hissed and swatted at him, he just kept on being curious - he didn't jump back, he didn't nip at the cat, just kept sniffing and trying to figure out what the cat was.
Kennel staff report that Thunder is super, super friendly!
DOGS: Yes. He's been tested with dogs around 40 lbs and did well. Was respectful of the female who was a bit afraid of him, and playfull with the playful male
CATS: Yes. He would need supervision at first, but his cat test went well. When one cat hissed at him, he just continued to be curious and sniff - he didn't back away and neither did he chase
KIDS: Have not seen around small kids and would have to be tested. Believe he will do well and will have only those issues that any large, rambunctious dog will have (and need to be supervised to avoid accidental knock-overs, etc)
IDEAL FAMILY: an active family who will train and teach Thunder, and give him the leadership he needs as a typical GSD. Securely fenced yard STRONGLY PREFERRED.
If you're looking for a stunning young, trainable German Shepherd
who will love you forever,
THUNDER may be your dream buddy!
THUNDER's ADOPTION FEE: $300 This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend
over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
