JEWEL is a 4-month old living doll!  Tihs little girl loves to romp and play chase with you, and will dance around you playing keep away.  She's bright-eyed and looks at the world as if to say, "Isn't this grass wonderful?  Isn't this fun??".  She's a typical adorable puppy, with adorable puppy energy and sweetness.

Sadly, Jewel has already known human abandonment.  Her owners got her as a cute puppy, played with her, then were (at minimum) careless or (at worst) cruel - Jewel's leg was broken in two places.  They then dumped her at a shelter saying the break was 3 days old.  So there little 20 lb Jewel sat, terrified, unable to walk, in pain, in a cage, all alone.  The wonderful shelter rescue coordinator worked with us to quickly get her to our vet, assess her leg, get X-rays, and determine whether the break was too old for surgical intervention. 

With the help of the shelter's rescue coordinator and fantastic vet Dr. Swanson of Camelot Court Vet Clinic in Overland Park, KS, we got Jewel into surgery immediately.  Dr. Swanson graciously squeezed her into his jam-packed surgery schedule on a moment's notice!  This was vital because the critical mark was 5 days - if the breaks were 5 days old or less, surgery would be successful.  If older than 5 days, only a splint could be done with hopes the leg would heal properly.  We were at exactly 5 days -- and Dr. Swanson moved into action!

Jewel did very well during surgery and the vet is pleased.  We don't expect any complications and she will recover just fine.  She'll be in recovery for 8 weeks as her leg heals, until July 1 2015.  She'll have some follow up care that includes removing some of the hardware in her leg as it heals.

JEWEL's ADOPTION FEE: $250
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
