MAJOR is a gorgeous hunk of a GSD, and has beautiful red and black colors throughout his thick coat.  He's a very standard German Shepherd size, at about 78 lbs.  He's had a rough life so far, and is hoping to find a family of his own to comfort him and give him all the love and attention he deserves!

Major was found as a stray just before Thanksgiving by a wonderful couple in Nebraska.  They had been traveling, and came across him lying on the side of the road near the ditch, barely alive.  He was in bad shape, and there was no one around for miles, so they picked him up and took him home with them.  They searched for his owners for a month and were unable to find anyone.  We believe he may have been someone's pet at some time because he did know several commands, including "kennel".  Unfortunately for sweet Major, all signs point to him being dropped off at the spot he was found.  This amazing couple completely nursed Major back to health.  They slowly fed him 5-6 small meals a day, so as not to shock his system.  They carried him outside to go potty since he was too weak to walk initially.  They took him to their vet and had him fully updated on his vaccinations, and had him neutered.  They fed him premium food, gave him vitamin supplements, gave him coconut oil to help his skin and coat, you name it, they did it!  All the while they were helping him medically, they also gave him attention and a ton of LOVE.  We couldn't have asked for better people to find this fantastic guy.

Major is now healthy, happy, and ready to find his very own forever home.  He's a dream dog!  He's mature and is past that crazy-puppy-energy stage.  He does fine with other dogs - so far we can only confirm dogs his size - but we suspect he would be fine with dogs of all sizes, he gets along famously well with cats, and he's friendly to people!  Give him a little bit of attention, adn he'll be leaning against you in no time!  He's a quiet guy who's perfectly content be with you, whether it's going for a walk, or laying at your feet.  He is house trained, and crate trained to boot!  He knows several commands including "Sit", "Down", "Stay" and "Kennel".  We just can't say enough good things about him - he really is the whole package - the BEST companion!

Some things that he LOVES:
  • Balls: Major loves a tennis ball - he'll go fetch it and chomp on it for hours if you toss it around for him!  It really brings out his excited, playful side.
  • Car rides:  He is wonderful in the car, and just loves to go for rides.  He loves to stick his head out the window to feel the wind in his face - even at 65 mph!
  • Kisses: He's not shy about giving kisses! He's just so grateful to be loved.
  • Walks:  Major walks great on a leash, and enjoys taking a stroll whenever his owner does.
  • Paw rubs:  That's right! His foster family reports he is not bothered in the slightest if they touch his feet (many dogs are opposed to this).  As a matter of fact, his eyes get heavy, and he starts to drift off when they rub his front paws!
Things to work on:
  • Helping him understand the game of fetch! He loves to go get the ball, but he could use some guidance in how and when to drop the ball to continue playing!
Is Major the one for you? Are you looking for a calm dog, companion, someone to love?  Apply now!

DOGS:   Yes, of similar size and energy level. A young, energetic, untrained dog jumping all over him or in his face may not be the best fit.
CATS:    Yes, he's great with cats!
KIDS:    Unknown, will be tested
IDEAL FAMILY:  A calm household, where he will be appreciated, and loved for the amazing dog he is!

If you're looking for a calm German Shepherd
who is past the crazy-energy-puppy stage,
and will be your companion for life,
MAJOR has been waiting for you!

MAJOR's ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
