SCHROEDER is a stunningly handsome GSD who was confiscated for cruelty; his owner kept him (along with fellow MoGS dogs Kosmo and Nala) in an outdoor pen without food or water. He was neglected and starved, but despite all of that, he's a super-sweet boy!  The first week in foster care, he spent his time taking treats from his foster mom, and instead of eating them, he hid them around the house, and then went back to check those places to verify they were still there.  Our hearts broke for him!  We're happy to say all of that is in the past now, and he's ready to start a new chapter with an amazing forever family!

Schroeder really enjoys being with his humans, and is a "velcro" dog to his foster mom -- wherever she goes, he's right there with her.  He loves playing with his foster fur-sibling, another GSD, but oftentimes is a little too over-the-top in his play.  He would do well in a home where another experienced dog can serve as a good role model for him.  He does take correction well, and this will take continued work by the family in his forever home.

He's a smart boy, and is working on learning and mastering several commands, and is house trained and crate trained, although when in his crate, he'd prefer you be in the room too.  He's a typical young, untrained GSD though - and he's at the age where he's testing boundaries, and seeing what he can get away with - similar to a teenager!

He does OK with other larger-sized dogs; but needs good supervision and correction, to prevent a fight breaking out when he puts a paw on another dog's back, or gets a little mouthy.  We're unsure at this time about small dogs, but he would likely play a little too rough with them.  And we think he would really like to chase cats, so at this time, we're recommending a home without them.

Here are a few things he LOVES:
  • Stuffed toys:  He loves to play with stuffed animals, and if often caught trying to steal his foster fur-sibling's toys.
  • People:  Schroeder LOVES his people, and is pretty treat motivated.  Give him a treat, and he's yours for life!
Things for him to work on:
  • Gentle down with other dogs:  He sometimes wants to jump all over the resident GSD; this must be supervised, and corrected, or a dog fight could potentially break out.
  • Socialization: His forever family will need to take him lots of places, so he starts becoming familiarlized with the big, wide world, including strange dogs and people.
  • Leash training: Since Schroeder was unsocialized, he wants to go everywhere and see everything, so when he's on a leash, he does pull, and is sometimes vocal about seeing other dogs.  With consistent correction and lots of practice, he'll be a gem and it will be very enjoyable to have him out-and-about with his forever family.
Remember that Schroeder is still a  puppy, with lots of puppy behavior!  He will still chew  on things, and will sporadically be rambunctious in the house.  With consistent leadership and continued training, he's going to be one heck of an awesome companion!

We're continuing to learn about Schroeder and his personality.  More updates to come soon, so please check back often!

DOGS:
Yes, similar sized dogs with good supervision during play.
CATS:
    Will need to be tested.
KIDS:
Schroeder has never lived with kids, but we think he would be fine with good supervision, as he could easily knock a child over during some of his rambunctions play.
IDEAL FAMILY:
A family with strong leadership, who will continue Schroeder's training, and will hel him shape into the wonderful dog we all know he can be!

If you're looking for a handsome, young,
trainable German Shepherd

who will love you forever,
SCHROEDER may be your ideal family member!

SCHROEDER's ADOPTION FEE:   $350
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save.  On average we spend over $450 on each dog.  We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then.  We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit.  At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip.  In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

Good with Dogs

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
