About Leah

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: 300.00
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Black with Tan, Yellow or Fawn
  • Current Age: 12 Years (best estimate)
LEAH is a bright, energetic, joyful young lady who's loving life and wants to play, play, play!   She wakes up each day ready to greet the day with a smile and a romp.  She loves her food, her treats, her ball and just about every ball she's ever met.

Leah ended up in a local shelter starved to the bone and missing most of her fur.  She was so pitiful that even the shelter people shook their heads.  She had been on the streets a very long time, or possibly was neglected / abandoned in a backyard.  This young girl had a massive yeast infection all over her body and in her ears.

Then the day after we got her, she developed pneumonia!

So Leah has had a very rough go!  But the terrific news is that we've nursed her through all this and she's now an healthy, happy girl who greets each day as if it's the best day of her life.  We think she probably never knew love, comfort, warmth, food or safety before she came to us -- this great big, new, safe, comfortable world is new and happy for her!  It's like she's' on a journey of discovery, where each day is happier than the last.  No matter how tired you are, it makes you grin just to watch her infectious enthusiasm!

And yet, for all that, Leah is a sensitive girl too.  She wants very much to please you and be loved by you - and if you brush her away too much or too gruffly, she's devastated.

Leah is house trained, crate trained, loves her food, has learned commands, and is working on leash training.

Leah gets along with the other (large) dogs  She would really enjoy having a doggie buddy to be best friends with, but we recommend a dog who will not invade her space too quickly.  It seems as though she never had doggie friends before, and she still doesn't like having them "in her face".  But if she gets to know them gradually she loves having them around and will now try to play.  Her version of play isn't rough-housing and mouthing each other, it's playing chase with her ball in her mouth (she likes to be the one being chased).  She can sometimes be a little jealous of her ball and needs a bit of supervision with a new dog while they sort out their pack structure and get to know each other.  After she first got over her pneumonia, it was heartbreaking to watch her gather EVERY toy and bone in the house into her crate!  She wanted them so badly, and she never wanted to lose them.  But  she no longer does this, and seems to realize the toys and bones won't disappear.  Still, her doggie buddy needs to respect this and/or be non-reactive.  A dominant dog would probably not be a good match for Leah, but a neutral or non-dominant dog of roughly her size and energy would be terrific.

Leah is an absolute and total lover -- she'd be a lap dog if she could!  She sometimes jumps on you in excitement while you're sitting down, and sometimes she'll gently give you her paw and beg for a belly rub.  She's having the puppyhood she never had!

Whoever adopts Leah, will have an absolutel gem of a dog!

Are YOU the very fortunate family who will share life and adventures with Leah the Lover?  Are YOU the one to finish up her training and show her that lots of humans are wonderful?  If so, you'll have one of the best pups around as your BFF!!

DOGS:              Yes, she'd enjoy a doggie buddy IF it's a dog who will not be overly intrusive into her space at first, and will allow her to develop a gradual relationship with him/her.
CATS:               Unknown, would have to be tested
KIDS:               Yes, though like any large and enthusiastic dog will need supervision to avoid accidentally knocking over small children
IDEAL FAMILY:   An active family who will hike, run, walk or possibly do things like agility with this sweet, loving girl!  A securely fenced yard is required, with a 6 ft fence strongly preferred.

If you're looking for a gorgeous, young, trainable German Shepherd
who will love you forever,
LEAH may be your best bud forever!

LEAH's ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
