About Jade | |
|
|
JADE is a gorgeous young lady who bonds quickly and closely with her owners. She's loving to those she knows, has lived with other dogs, and is a very trainable, intelligent girl.
Jade went to a lovely couple when she was just 7 weeks old, and they loved her. However, they were in their 60's, and after several years decided she was too much for them and they didn't have the time or energy to handle or train her. Jade's world was fairly limited (to her home and territory) and she lacked socialization with strangers and other animals. As a result she became extremely protective of "her" house/yard and did not like strangers in her space. Her owners loved her, but were not able to work with her to redirect her protectiveness into appropriate channels.
Jade is currently in a foster home where she is being exposed to people coming and going, and is given the corrective leadership she needs to understand what is and is not appropriate protection behavior. She is doing great so far - she is SO sweet to her fosters (lots of kisses) and is responding very well to corrections. She listens to and watches everything, and is learning how to walk properly on a leash. She is still learning how to play appropriately with dogs and humans.
Jade, so far, has shown she has a dominant personality with other dogs. She shares her foster home with 3 other similar-sized dogs (all large breed), and is trying to understand where she fits into the pack. She tries to assert her dominance with the other dogs in the house doing things such as jogging along side of them, sticking her nose in their faces, and staring them down. She is making progress, and is improving every day, but until she learns her "place in the pack", she will require constant supervision.
Check back for more updates as Jade continues to make progress!
DOGS: Possibly. She is currently in a foster home with 3 other large dogs (2 are GSDs), however, Jade has a dominant personality, so good supervision would be required.
CATS: Unknown, would have to be tested
KIDS: CURRENTLY RECOMMEND OLDER CHILDREN ONLY
IDEAL FAMILY: An active home with older children and possibly another dog (non-dominant!) as a play buddy. A family who is experienced in canine leadership and are both able and willing to provide the firm boundaries, training and leadership Jade needs to become the fantastic dog she really is!
JADE's ADOPTION FEE: $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
