JACOB is a classic black and tan German Shepherd who's got one sweetheart of a personality.  He gets along with everyone, is happy-go-lucky, and is just aching for his forever family to show up!  Is that YOU?   Are YOU the lucky ones to take him home for a lifetime of love and fun?

Jacob was a stray who ended up at a shelter, already neutered but clearly never trained.  He seems to have been left alone a lot - he follows his foster mom everywhere as if afraid she'll leave him.  He won't go outdoors by himself (common in neglected dogs).  If they're out in the yard and his human steps back indoors just to refill the water bowl, he cries even though his doggie sibiling is out there with him.  He even follows his foster mom when she's vacuuming!  So he definitely needs to know he's loved and has a FOREVER home, a family who will never desert him again.

Jacob loves other dogs, is great with kids, and loves his people.  His foster home has 3 kids (youngest is 9 yrs), another dog, and a busy family -- and he's doing great.  Initial cat testing went well but if you have cats, we would want to do further testing.

He rides well in the car, isn't crazy about baths but will tolerate them, walks great on a leash, and is housebroken.  He's good about kenneling up and so far doesn't chew on things he shouldn't.  However, as he gets comfortable and settles in that could change - he's still a puppy after all!

He didn't have any training but is learning quickly - sit, down, etc.  He's mouthy - a herding behavior all GSD puppies have that should be trained out of them early on - but his foster family is working on that and he's making progress.

Overall, Jacob is a big 84 lb sweetheart who just wants to be loved and is a bit timid.  He needs reassurance that people DO love him and WON'T desert him.  His new family needs to continue the training we've started and love, love, love him while he gains confidence and certainty.

Just one exceptionally fortunate family will get to take Jacob home and love him for life.  Just one family will get to watch him grow and mature.  Just one family will be blessed with his love and life-long companionship.  Is that YOU?  Are YOU that very special family?

DOGS:                 Yes!!! Would LOVE a doggie buddy!
CATS:                  Needs further testing.  Believe will be ok.
KIDS:                   Yes, he's great with kids.
IDEAL FAMILY:   A family who's at least moderately active and hopefully has another dog Buddy can pal around with.  A loving family who will commit to him FOR A LIFETIME!

If you're looking for a gorgeous, young, sweet-natured German Shepherd
who gets along with everyone,
JACOB may be your ideal family member!

JACOB's ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

More about Jacob (5.14)

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
