MAUSER is is a classically handsome big male with a gorgeous coat and a loving personality -- and he's just chomping at the bit to find his new fur-ever family!!

BACKGROUND
Mauser originally came to MOGS 6 years ago when he wasn't even a year old yet.  He had been found stray multiple times (jumped their 4 ft fence), and his family had always reclaimed him at the shelter.  But the last time they didn't bother to come get him.  We took him in and adopted him to a man who now has encountered some health and family issues that prevent him from keeping Mauser in a safe manner.  Sadly, even though he loved Mauser he recently returned Mauser to us so that Mauser can have a better life.

PERSONALITY
Mauser is a friendly boy who loves attention!  He's a happy dog -- just look at that smile!  He loves life, people and affection.  We're still getting to know him after his years with the adopter, but he was a playful and a typical energetic pup when we had him originally.  He loved playing with people and other dogs then.  SInce then he's lived in a quiet single-person home and we're not yet sure exactly how playful he is now.  However, we had a 6 hour drive back to Kansas City and he seemed to have plenty of energy.  When we had him originally he was a ball of fun, goofiness, and energy, and ihe still seems to have that same attitude of loving life!

PEOPLE
He's a people dog!  He met 3 strangers when we picked him up, then went to the vet and met some more strangers, and he did great with everyone.  He loves the attention and the affection of being with people.  We haven't had the chance to see him around kids since his return at the start of the pandemic, and that has yet to be tested.  He used to do well with kids, and we suspect he'll be good with them now too -- with the caveat that he's big, energetic, and needs some manners!

OTHER ANIMALS

Mauser is in boarding due to lack of foster homes, and he's currently in doggie daycare and loving it.  Originally Mauser loved other dogs and loved playing with them.  Since then he's spent over 4 years as an only dog in a quiet rural home with few  visitors.  Then a little over a year ago he got a young female GSD as a buddy, and after some adjustments on both their parts they became good friends and playmates.  He and his sister used to get out and visit a neighbor's dog, and were fine with that (medium-sized) dog.   Small dogs and cats are unknown at this time and will have to be tested.  We do not have any information as yet on prey drive.

TRAINING
Mauser clearly remembers some of his earlier training -- such as "sit" -- but has not had much in the way of training or rules in recent years.    He's very smart and we think he'll do very well with refreshers and some new training.  He's a typical GSD -- strong willed but also very smart and responsive.  He needs a good leader who will educate him on the rules and boundaries of the household.

OVERALL
Buddy is a big (90 lbs) boy who is happy and friendly.  He's got good energy and just needs training reminders with a good leader who will teach him good  manners.

ARE YOU THE LUCKY FAMILY TO ADD MAUSER TO YOUR FAMILY?    Are YOU the ones to love and play with this happy guy?  To train and guide him, and show him how good life can be?  Apply now!

DOGS:                   Yes.  Needs proper introductions just due to his size and enthusiasm, but he'd love to have a play buddy of  medium or large size.  Small dogs are unknown as yet.
CATS:                    Unknown, will have to be tested
KIDS:                    Needs to be tested to be confirmed.  He used to do well and we suspect he would just need supervision and manners due to his size and enthusiasm.
IDEAL FAMILY:     An active family with a 6 ft fence (he used to be able to fly over a 4 ft fence), possibly another dog to play with, and lots of love, leadership, exercise, and training.

  If you're looking for a good-looking, happy-natured, mature guy
who will love you and be by your side forever,
MAUSER may be your new BFF!

MAUSER's ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save.  On average we spend over $450 on each dog.  We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then.  We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit.  At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip.  In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

More about Mauser

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
