Jake is a long-legged, gorgeous, soft-furred sweetheart who's young, loves life, and wants to play! He loves playing with other dogs, and quickly assumes a playful submissive posture even when the other dog is not being dominant. See the video, playing with a medium sized pitbull he had just met. He folded up those long legs of his, went down on the ground, and rolled right over, saying to his newfound friend, "Let's have fun!"
Jake was turned into a high kill shelter by an owner who dumped him and a number of small dogs, saying they didn't want any of them anymore. We don't know what went on in that home, but at least it appears he was neither physically abused or starved. He's good with other dogs and loves people! He's affectionate, loving and sweet! Within an hour of arriving at his foster home, he was cuddling with a teenager who promptly said, "Let's adopt him!"
Jake is house trained but hates his crate and needs a Great Dane size crate that's' securely zip-tied or equivalent. We're slowly getting him accustomed to it. Jake also loves to wander if there's a chance, so he needs a securely fenced yard. Jake also some normal protective instincts: he escaped and when a neighbor came to the foster mom's aid, Jake barked at him when he thought the neighbor was a possible threat to his foster mom. So he will likely make a good alert dog at your house, too.
We haven't seen Jake around small children but believe he would be a loving companion. This would have to be tested further. The only issue is likely to be his sheer size (XLarge) and power - so all interactions with children will have to be supervised to avoid accidental knock-downs and too-rough play that may end in a child being scratched or bruised. Jake must have a securely fenced yard, and a 6 ft fence is STRONGLY preferred!
Jake was in a temporary foster home before coming to us, and sadly he killed a ferret. We don't know if he was purposely trying to do so, or if he was trying to play, but the end result was the same. Several other ferrets were injured. We recommend no exotic pets in the same home with Jake.
Are you looking for a young, goofy, playful, loving dog to be a lifelong companion? Ready for a tall, lanky teenager of a dog who wants to grow old with you? Jake's your man!
DOGS: Yes, does well with other dogs
CATS: Unknown, would have to be tested
KIDS: Unknown, would have to be tested, believe he would be a great companion so long as interactions are supervised to make sure Jake doesn't accidentally knock a child over or get too rough in play (due to his sheer size)
IDEAL FAMILY: an active home that will play and exercise Jake daily, and cuddle/love with him. A doggie buddy to play with, a large yard to play in, and a securely fenced yard (6 ft fence STRONGLY PREFERRED!)
If you're looking for a big, loving, beautiful dog who's a cuddler and a lover,
JAKE may be the best buddy you've dreamed of!
JAKE's ADOPTION FEE: $250
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
