CALLIE is a gorgeous, adorable, affectionate young girl who's FULL of life!!!  She's an energizer-bunny, typical of an 11-month old puppy.  She defniitely needs training and strong canine leadership, but once she has them she's going to be a truly spectacular girl!  She's a very social girl - she loves people, just wants to be with you, and adores playing.  She's a lover who follows you most everywhere and is likely to be your shadow.  She has a slightly-fluffy, soft-as-silk coat that you'll love to run your fingers through, and adorable soft ears.

Callie's former owners left her at a high-kill shelter. Sadly, a family member tried to save her and went to the shelter to adopt her, but because Callie was never socialized with other dogs she didn't get along with their dog.  So Callie's last chance disappeared.  She was on the kill list when we got a last minute call from a rescuer who knew her story, asking us to commit to her long term rehab.  We couldn't say no to rescuing this sweet girl.

Callie is housetrained and crate trained.  Where she once roamed everywhere at will (original owners had a doggie door), she's now learned some structure and discipline.  She's FULL of energy and definitely needs to worn out with daily mental and physical exercise - at least 1-2 hours a day of heavy exercise!

Callie is also very loving and endearingly sweet - she picks up some of her foster mom's socks and carries them around but doesn't chew them up!  She's curious about everything.  If you have something in your hand, she wants to see it.  If you open a drawer whe wants to look in it.  If you reach in your pocket, she wants to know what you're getting.  She's super affectionate, adores people and doesn't like to be left alone in the yard without you.  She'll come to the screen door and look in to check on you.  She wants to be with you - she tends to keeps her foster mom in sight to be sure she doesn't disappear.  This is normal for dogs who are suddenly abandoned, and once she's settled in her own home for a while will calm down.  She's been through a lot and needs to feel secure again. But she's a social girl, and probably a bit of a party animal - the more people to love on her and be loved by her, the merrier!

She likes car rides but is still learning to calm down in the car, sleeps through the night without being crated, and loves her food and treats. She has a big bark, but doesn't use it much.

OTHER DOGS:  Callie was not socialized with other animals and can be unpredictable with new dogs, often over-reacting and trying to push them around or nip at them.  This seems to be her lack of familiarization and lack of boundaries/manners, and her month of professional training has started to educate her out of this reactivity.   In her foster home she has played and played with a  female GSD puppy, a 2 yr medium sized male mutt, and a 1 yr GSD male .  However, all her play buddies are confident and friendly.  Callie will NOT do well with either a dominant dog or a submissive/fearful one.  It would be ideal for her to have a doggie play buddy - it will blow her energy, help teach her manners, and keep her minimally socialized.

Overall, Callie is a super loving, super energetic girl who loves life but due to her owner's lack of training, structure or discipline is like a 4-month old puppy who's just starting to learn.   Callie has a lot to learn - and MUST HAVE A STRONG LEADER WITH FIRM RULES, BOUNDARIES AND LEADERSHIP AT ALL TIMES.

Are YOU the lucky family who are strong leaders?  Are YOU willing to spend a little time and a little effort to continue this girl's training and bring her up to speed on good manners with people and dogs?  If so, you'll have a stunning, loving, devoted companion for life.  Oh, and a gorgeous girl on your arm ... er... leash ... to boot!

DOGS:                      Yes, depending on the dog.  Currently in a foster home where she plays like crazy with a 4 month old puppy and a medium size 2 yr old mixed breed male.  Other dog MUST be non-dominant!  She can NOT be with a dominant dog (would over react) or a fearful dog (would want to dominate).
CATS:                      Yes, is in foster care with a dog-saavy, confident cat
KIDS:                       She lived with a 7 yr old child, but we would want to test her around your children.  Believe she will do well IF supervised properly - she's young, HIGHLY energetic, rough, enthusiastic and energetic -- and would easily knock over a small child in play or by accident
IDEAL FAMILY:        A very active family who will give her the DAILY exercise, socialization, training and leadership she needs!  Would be ideal to have the right doggie play buddy, to help both socialize her and use up her energy, but must be a dog of her own energy level and one who's neither dominant nor submissive.  A family who will exercise strong discipline and structure, and establish and enforce rules!!! Securely fenced yard required, 6 ft privacy fence strongly preferred.

If you're looking for a young, energetic, gorgeous, and trainable furball
who will love you forever,
and are willing to work with her to continue her training,
CALLIE may be your ideal family member!

CALLIE's ADOPTION FEE:   $250
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so o

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
