About Jesse (5.14)

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: 250.00
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 12 Years (best estimate)
  • Location: Springfield MO
Jesse is young but he's lived a very tough life.  He was abandoned in central Arkansas by his owners when they moved out and left him on a chain.  He was literally starved and dehydrated.  Neighbors stepped in with some limited help, and a woman took him in.  But he scratched their small child when he jumped on her in play, and they decided it was easier to get rid of him than to train him.  Fortunately, a kind-hearted woman who takes in dogs was notified before the couple did something drastic with him and took Jesse to her home.

There he finally got a full belly, the water he needed, and the comfort and shelter he desperately looked for.  Sadly, some members of the woman's family don't support her rescue efforts much, and told her Jesse had to go.  The woman was going to be forced to either take Jesse to a local pound - a sure-fire death sentence - or take him back to where he was abandoned and hope someone else would help him.  She was desperate for help and contacted numerous rescues.  Thanks to a wonderful new volunteer foster family in southern Missouri, we were able to take him in immediately and get him safe!  We believe Jesse is a very high GSD mix, perhaps with a little husky or hound in him.

Jesse is great with other dogs, and is currently in a wonderful foster home with 4 other dogs ranging from small (daschund) to large.  When the others growled at him initially, he simply walked away.  He's also trainable with cats - he likes to chase them in play and will need training.  He's fine with kids except that he jumps and can easily knock over a smaller child, so will need supervision and training around smaller children if there are children in his new home. This is the same challenge that all large, enthusiastic dogs present around small children and are easily handled with supervision and training.

Jesse is housetrained and crate trained, and is a calm guy around the house except when he's playing with the other dogs.  His foster parents report he's doing better and better every day, and is settling in nicely.  At first he was somewhat distant (one typical behavior of abandoned dogs who have been 'passed around' and think they're safe only to be passed around again).  He also had 'panic attacks' in which he would run and jump in his foster's lap and need to be petted for a few  minutes.  This is also a result of being abandoned and passed around, and it's tapering off nicely.  He now needs that reassurance maybe once a day for a few seconds, then is content to go on his way.  He's beginning to trust he's OK, truly safe and loved!!  His former owners let him become heartworm positive (no monthly preventive), and we are treating him for that.  He's a healthy and very happy boy.

Overall, Jesse is a beautiful, sweet, lively young man who's realizing life-is-good-now - and is grateful to be safe and loved.  He's going to make just one very lucky family a faantastic lifetime buddy and best friend!

Are you looking for a young dog with great energy but one who's not over the top?  A dog who's got personality plus and loves life?  A dog to be your companion and friend?  Look no further!  Jesse is that dog!

JESSE's ADOPTION FEE:   $250
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so o

Good with Dogs

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
