SUSIE Q is a cutie pie! This girl is super sweet, has personality plus, and is so glad to be INSIDE a house again she's just bursting with joy. Susie is a beautiful girl inside and out - and everyone who meets her falls head over heels in love with her!
Susie loves everyone and everything, and is in love with life. She loves to go out, she loves to stay in, she just loves being loved and in turn loves everyone.
Sadly, Susie has a terrible story. It's hard to believe what she's been through in her short life. She originally belonged to a family in rural southern Missouri (referred to as the Puppy Mill Capitol of the U.S.). She was supposedly an indoor dog, but was attacked by the family's other dogs and her tail was stripped of its fur and much of its skin. It was so badly damaged that the tail was amputated. After that, Susie was
shot in the head and her hearing permanently damaged. Who shot her is unknown.
Her family then gave her away to an elderly couple in their 90's. But they didn't want a large, young, energetic dog in the house and threw Susie outdoors as "protection". Susie lived alone 24/7 and was left to roam. Bored and lonely, she started leaving their property. They were afraid the neighbors would complain, so they chained her up. For a year she lived on a short, heavy chain. She was tied to the bottom of the porch and had almost no shelter from the elements. She became restless, unhappy and vocal. The owners decided to "get rid of her" and take her to a local high-kill pound. A wonderful woman intervened to try and prevent that, contacted us begging for help, and we immediately agreed to take Susie Q. This wonderful lady has a difficult personal situation yet made the time to be Susie's angel -- Thank you, Laurie S!
We transported Susie Q to Kansas City and a loving foster home. She was an instant hit with everyone she met - friendly, enthusiastic, full of life and energy and happiness! Her hearing loss is significant though not total, but she doesn't let that slow her down for a second! Susie appears to hear high-pitched sounds but not normal human tones. Her loving foster family is teaching her hand signals and she's doing very well!
Susie is said to have been an indoor dog originally, but for a year she lived outside on a chain. This super sweet girl was a victim of two families who treated her badly while using her for their own ends. She never knew stability or real love - until now. NOW she's safe. NOW she's warm. NOW she's indoors. NOW she has a comfy bed, plenty to eat and fosters who adore her. NOW she has plenty of human and dog companionship. No more loneliness. No more living on the end of a 6 ft. chain (if you can call that living).
The main thing Susie needs to learn, in addition to hand signals, is simply how to gentle down with other animals. She's SO enthusiastic, wants SO badly to play and romp, that she gets way too rough. She thinks she's playing but it can be taken the wrong way and very quickly escalate into a fight with the wrong dog. So her wonderful foster family is slowly teaching her to gentle down and back off a bit .... and then she'll be able to really have fun!
Susie is loving, affectionate, and her enthusiasm for life is downright contagioius! Despite her crummy start in life, her hearing loss, being shot in the head, having her tail attacked and amputated, being lonely, being thrown outdoors, being chained up - this girl has grabbed hold of life and clearly intends to enjoy the ride!
Are YOU the one lucky family who will be graced by her infectious happiness? Are YOU the ones who will love her forever, and in turn be loved like never before? Are YOU the one-and-only very special family with big hearts and the willingness to learn hand signals? If so, you'll be one VERY lucky family!

SUSIE Q's ADOPTION FEE: $250
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
