ZEVA is an absolutely stunning black-and-tan German Shepherd, a classic beauty. She's also a big girl - tall and weighs in at 111 lbs. She's full of energy, life and fun, and makes you smile at the way she plays with abandon and enjoys life. She's a lovebug and adores people, as well as loving to play with other dogs.
Zeva has an unusual background. She was sold by a breeder to an elderly couple, who soon found themselves unable care for her. At just 1.5 years old she was about to be homeless when a family member stepped up to take her in. They discovered Zeva had no manners and was something of a wild child, due to simple lack of training and proper exercise. For the last year or so, she lived with the family member's other dogs and has done very well. Now a personal situation has put the owner in a position where she must rehome Zeva.
So Zeva had no training in her first year or so of life, and has been catching up over the last year. She lived with another mellow German Shepherd, a lively shepherd mix, and a small dog. She LOVES to play, and she and the shepherd mix would play almost non-stop. Zeva is VERY energetic and plays rough, though she's making progress in that area. Since she's a big girl, any dog she plays with needs to be ok with this. Her new family also needs to keep working with her to continue the "gentle-down" training. Her rambunctiousness is partly due to the fact that she never had a true puppyhood and is making up for it. It's also partly due to her age - she's just coming out of puppyhood. And the other part is just her personality. She's enthusiastic, loves everyone, and is a big girl!
Zeva has come a long way from where she was, and her new family needs to continue this progress with proper training and supervision. Zeva is so sweet and so loving, that she's MORE than worth the effort! She's also one very smart cookie and learns quickly, so with consistent leadership and rules she will continue to learn well.
Zeva is also good with kids. She's never lived with kids, but has spent time around a baby and a toddler and loved them. Like any large dog, she requires excellent supervision around small kids, just because she's big and rambunctious - and could easily knock over a small child in play or by accident.
Overall, Zeva is a big lover who just needs continued work on learning how to "gentle down" in certain situations. She still plays very roughly and doesn't know her own strength. She also MUST have at least 1-2 hours of serious exercise every day - not merely taking walks but serious interaction with her such as playing ball, running, or other strenuous exercise designed to blow her energy and stimulate her mind. Zeva also has a high prey drive and loves to chase little critters in her yard or on walks, so continued training there will be helpful as well.
Are YOU the lucky ones who will get to have Zeva join your family? To cuddle with? To play with? To run with? To teach? To love forever? To exercise? To lead? She will truly be a magnificent BGG and buddy for life! (And gorgeous to boot)
DOGS: Yes. Would LOVE a play buddy approx. her own size. PLAYS ROUGH, so needs a dog buddy who understands and can deal with that.
CATS: Unknown, would have to be tested. Have not seen her around cats but has a high prey drive
KIDS: Yes. Has been around a baby and a toddler and seems to love kids, though she has never lived with them. Like any BIG dog, she can easily knock over a small child in play or by accident, so requires the supervision any big, strong, rambunctious dog does
IDEAL FAMILY: An active family who can and will give her the exercise she needs! She's a loving, sweet girl who simply doesn't know her own strength and needs continued "gentling" down training
If you're looking for a big, gorgeous, young, trainable German Shepherd
who will love you forever,
ZEVA may be your ideal family member!
ZEVA's ADOPTION FEE: $300 This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend
over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
