JASMINE (aka Jazzy) is an adorable, beautiful medium-sized girl who is an absolute lovebug! Shy at first, Jazzy quickly warms up when she realizes that the kindness and love are real and not a trick. She adores people, adores being cuddled, loves attention, and would gladly sleep with you or snuggle on the couch with you. She will be your little shadow, will nudge you for attention, and jump up beside you if you let her. She's starting to run and jump for joy in the yard, as if taking the first steps to thinking she's truly safe! In short, Jazzy is an absolute darling of a little girl, and a perfect size for those who don't want a more medium-sized dog!
Jazzy and her daughter GiGi broke our hearts at first sight. They were part of a family of 4 strays taken in by animal control and were scared to death. The well-meaning shelter mislabeled them as "semi-feral" -- which virtually guaranteed they would be killed for nothing more than extreme shyness that came from being consistently ignored and pushed away. We went to meet and assess the dogs, and what we found was truly heart-wrenching.
The little family had given up hope of any kindness from humans. They were all in separate cages, and If a human approached they retreated to a corner and curled up in hopes you wouldn't see them. Jasmine looked at us with soul-sad eyes as if praying for something good -- but expecting something cruel. Her daughter GiGi seemed to have no hope at all, and we suspect that where momma Jasmine had known love at one time, her daughter Gigi has never known kindness at all.
We immediately said we'd squeeze the girls in somehow, and work to find help for the boys in the family (lab mixes who found foster homes with other groups). NO DOG SHOULD DIE BECAUSE THEY'RE "SHY". We've rehabbed hundreds of shy dogs - many of whom are mislabel as feral. It truly isn't very difficult. It takes time, patience, and love. But most of all, it takes the willingness to put aside o
ur own desire to have the dog love us -- to cuddle with us, to come up and nudge us, to give us doggie kisses. A shy dog simply won't do those things for a long time. They run away from you to the furthest corner of the room or yard, they refuse touch, they cower. But as time goes on and they come to understand they're safe from harm, they start to emerge from their shell of past cruelties.
Patience. Love. Time. Is that so much to ask to save a life?
We've only had Jasmine and her daughter GiGi for a short time and still have a lot to learn about them. We think Jasmine did know kindness at one time in her life. It's clear she remembers and
wants the love and touch! But, she's also not sure whether it will turn into hitting/kicking/scolding. We were able to touch and pet her for brief periods while she was in boarding, and now that she's in a temporary foster home she's become a lovebug who just wants your attention. She just wants to be loved and to love you!
Unfortunately, due to a shortage of people willing to open their homes and hearts to save a life, Jasmine and GiGi were in boarding, and then spent the holidays in a VERy temporary foster home. She is now in a wonderful foster home with her daughter Gigi and a large senior shepherd/dane mix male. Jazzy would do well living with another dog who is non-dominant.
We have't tested Jasmine around dogs other than GiGi yet, and won't attempt that for a while until she's de-stressed and much more comfortable. But we believe she'll be good with other dogs and with people. Cats are unknown, and small kids are not recommended for her at this time simply due to the noise, high energy and chaos of childhood. We believe she'll do well with kids once she has settled down and is rehabbed.
STAY TUNED for updates!
THE IDEAL FOSTER HOME WOULD BE ABLE TO FOSTER BOTH JASMINE & GIGI! Gigi is the shyer of the two, and she learns rapidly by watching her mom Jasmine cuddle up with humans. Gigi's rehab will be much faster if she stays with her mom at least for a while.DOGS: Yes, would be fine after initial introductions with another non-dominant dog
CATS: Unknown, would have to be tested
KIDS: Unknown, would have to be tested but we suspect would love them. The only requirement would be that the kids be respectful and not rough
IDEAL FAMILY: a patient, loving family who would love having a "shadow" and a medium sized "lap dog"! A securely fenced yard for her to romp in (though she prefers to spend most of her time wherever you are)
If you have a huge heart for a sweet dog who's been through hell and back, and want a lovebug,
JASMINE will truly love you forever !
JASMINE's ADOPTION FEE: $200
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
