BLACKIE is one of 4 wonderful high german shepherd mix youngsters we recently took in. They had been at a rural humane society for 3 months, left there by owners who carelessly bred a German Shepherd and a Lab, but couldn't sell the puppies so dumped them to die at taxpayer expense. The humane society called us only when the puppies were next on the kill list, and thanks to Facebook we were able to get 4 wonderful foster homes with virtually no notice!
All of the pups seem to be the same temperament - sweet, loving, and downright charming! Blackie is probably the most adventurous and playful of the group, and is energetic, playful and sweet-tempered. He's curious, loving and a lover! He loves to be with you and around you, and seems to be enjoying his first taste of a real home and love to the max. He wants to please you. He can be a little shy at first but seems to love everyone (dog and human alike) and be enjoying the heck out of himself for the first time in his life! Once he gets comfortable, he's a typical young boy - playful, energetic and full of fun.
Blackie is in a foster home with several other large dogs and at first he was a bit intimidated! He barked in his crate, thinking he needed to protect himself. But an amazing thing happened - the family's oldest (and somewhat cranky) male came over, sniffed, ignored Blackie's barking, and laid down by Blackie's crate as if to say "I feel your pain, man, but believe me it's all good! Everything is fine, just wait and you'll see." From that moment on, Blackie was fine and became part of the pack.
He lives in a foster home with older children, who adore him and are showing him the ropes of living with kids. Like his siblings, he's still adjusting to the whole new world of being loved!
Blackie is thriving in his active and lively foster home - and will make one very lucky family a terrific lifetime companion and buddy! He and his siblings were simply never exposed to a normal, loving home or life - and they have a lot to learn. But like his brothers and sisters, Blackie is soaking it up quickly. It's fun to see him unfold more every day, and emerge into a normal life as a loved and loving companion!
Blackie is doing well with his potty training and is almost completely trained. He is also crate trained and does very well with it.
Blackie has a unique foster home: his foster mom is an elementary school teacher and is part of a program that includes her school, a major university, and a large humane society. Each teacher in the program chose a project for their students for the year - and the project she chose was to teach her students about the extreme difficulty black dogs and cats have in getting adopted! Black dogs and cats die in huge numbers in shelters, and it's critical to educate people about the urgent situation they're in. So when the opportunity to foster Blackie came up, the wonderful foster mom was thrilled! She is now able to show her students a living example of why it's important to help black dogs and cats!!! Blackie is becoming a true ambassador for his fellow dogs and cats, and will likely get to go to the school to help teach the students. What a wonderful opportunity to educate and inform - and demonstrate in the flesh what a wonderful and loving pet a black dog or cat really is!
DOGS: YES. A home with a doggie buddy is strongly preferred!
CATS: Unknown. Would have to be tested but we believe will do well
KIDS: YES. Has done well around kids at events and similar situations
IDEAL FAMILY: A family looking for a wel-tempered kiddo to share their love and life FOREVER! No more being dumped or unwanted, or living in a kennel run! A family who truly will regard him as a family member and keep her safe and cared for, for life! A family willing and able to see him through the final part of his emergence into a normal, loving life as a beloved family pet!
If you're looking for an adorable, sweet-tempered, young, trainable furball
who will love you forever,
BLACKIE may be your dream dog!
BLACKIE's ADOPTION FEE: $250
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so o
