SISSY is one of 4 wonderful high german shepherd mix youngsters we recently took in.  They had been at a rural humane society for 3 months, left there by owners who carelessly bred a German Shepherd and a Lab, but couldn't sell the puppies so dumped them to die at taxpayer expense.  The humane society called us only when the puppies were next on the kill list, and thanks to Facebook we were able to get 4 wonderful foster homes with virtually no notice!

All of the pups seem to be the same temperament - sweet, loving, and downright charming!  Sissy attended our last large adoption event of the season, which was noisy and chaotic, and stole the show!  She loved everyone (dog and human alike). was soft and gentle with everyone  (child and adult alike) and seeme to enjoy the heck out of herself!  She gave kisses, accepted all kinds of hugs, and mesmerized everyone with her soft eyes.

Sissy is in a foster home with a senior male GSD and adores playing with him.  At first she wouldn't leave her new foster mom's leg, so her foster mom began stepping back inside and partially closing the door while keeping a careful eye on Sissy.  Gradually Sissy began to venture into the big yard, and watch her new big brother play with his ball.  She now joins in, and seems to love the yard, though if you're out there she'll be by your side like glue.  For the first time in her life, Sissy has a home and a family -- and she's not about to let it slip through her fingers!

Sissy is absolutely adorable, with a soft, charming face and a gentle, loving personality.  We believe she will be one terrific family companion and pet for a family of any type - with or without kids, highly or moderately active.  She would ADORE having another dog and that is strongly preferred (it's her comfort zone, she has always lived with other dogs).  We also prefer a securely fenced yard.

Sissy is doing well with her crate training (hated the first night and complained all night long).  She was not housetrained at all and is prone to some submissive peeing, but is doing very well and just needs some continued work on this.  As she gains confidence that she is loved and secure, she's coming along nicely with her potty training.

DOGS:             YES.  A home with a doggie buddy is strongly preferred!
CATS:              Unknown.  Would have to be tested but we believe will do well
KIDS:              YES.  Has been very good around kids at events and similar situations
IDEAL FAMILY:   A family looking for a soft, gentle kiddo to share their love and life FOREVER!  No more being dumped or unwanted, or living in a kennel run!  A family who truly will regard her as a family member and keep her safe and cared for, for life!  A family willing and able to see her through the final part of her emergence into a normal, loving life as a beloved family pet!

If you're looking for a gorgeous, sweet. young, trainable furball
who will love you forever,
SISSY may be your dream dog!

SISSY's ADOPTION FEE:   $250
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so o

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
