About Snoopy

SNOOPY is a stunning, big white German Shepherd!  Oooooh la la!  He's 87 lbs and is still 15 lbs underweight, so when he gets weight on him he will be a 100 lb hunk of burning love.

Snoop LOVES to be loved on and petted - have you looked at the picture of him and his great foster dad (only Snoop's nose shows!)?  He'll nose-butt his way in to get attention!! He looks at you with those big brown eyes and your heart just melts!  He's impossible to resist.

Snoopy has a sad history. He belonged to a family who let him and his Chihuahua brother roam freely.  The family gave the boys little to no attention.  They were not part of the family and were definitely not loved.  There have been some signs of  harsh treatment if not abuse (hesitancy to approach, uncertainty about your intentions) but he is quickly overcoming those!  Snoopy's ONLY family - the only love he knew - was his little Chi brother.  Then one day his human family moved out of the country and left both boys on the street to starve!!!!  Can you imagine how confused and scared they were?  They weren't loved, but at least they had had a little bit of food - and suddenly that was gone as well.  He was extremely bonded to his little Chi brother, who was the only creature in the world who loved him.  After the boys were picked up stray, neighbors told officials that Snoopy had defended his Chi brother a short time before from another small dog who was threatening the Chi.  The aggressor dog did require some treatment but was fine.  Poor Snoopy -- no love, no affection, no family except his Chi brother, and then to be in trouble for protecting his little brother!

When the boys arrived at the shelter, the shelter wisely separated them so Snoopy wouldnt automatically try to protect his little brother.  Poor Snoopy was very distressed and confused in the shelter, and was timid towards shelter employees.  But he quickly bonded to one of the volunteers who worked with him regularly, and clearly loved the affection he felt for the first time in his life.

The shelter called MOGS because they felt Snoopy would benefit from the special understanding and attention of breed specialists, and we gladly went to meet him.  When our MOGS volunteer arrived, Snoopy he was shy at first -but boy, did he warm up fast!  After just 15 minutes he let the volunteer love on him!  This sweet boy has been yearning for love and warmth his whole life - and never had any until now.

Thanks to a wonderful now foster home who stepped up, Snoopy is now in a loving temporary family where he's learning what it’s like to be loved, to truly be part of a family, to play with toys - and he's loving every minute of it!  He sniffs the flowers, cuddles with his foster parents, romps around with his foster GSD sister, and is discovering what a life of love is like.

Snoopy is still in learning mode, and his new family will have to continue that.  Because he was leaderless his entire life, he's not used to having rules or having humans enforce them.  So he needs a good canine leader to continue the training begun in his foster home!  He needs leash training and leadership to show him he can't do whatever he wants.  He MUST have positive reinforcement training and loving leadership.  He's a typical German Shepherd -- alert and highly intelligent -- who also happens to just now be learning things his family should have taught him as a puppy.  It's' not his fault he doesn't know them - his owners never bothered to teach him anything.  He was floundering his way through life before, doing the best he could but largely without confidence, and now as his confidence grows stronger and stronger he needs a guardian who will keep him in line and direct his confidence in the right ways

Snoopy is also a typical GSD with instinctual protective behaviors, and needs a leader who will take that responsibility away from him and teach him what appropriate protectionism looks like.

Overall, our Snoopy is really a big lover - a very smart, alert, loyal one! He craves your attention and affection. He doesn't like it when his foster parents leave him and has already bonded to them in his short time with them.  As is typical of so many dogs who have never known love, he's desperate to make sure his newfound life of love doesn't disappear!  It's heart-aching that he has even grabbed their clothes and chewed on them to protest when they leave for work!!  Can you imagine explaining that little hole in your pants was because this loving dog didn't want you to disappear?

Snoopy is both crate trained and housetrained.  He must be crated when you're gone, both because he's still a youngster who doesn't know all the rules, and because he can get anxious while he adjusts to the idea that he'll always be loved from now on.

IDEAL HOME:   an active family who will spend lots of time with Snoopy and will give him the leadership he wants and deserves!  Good canine leaders who will continue his "education" in what it means to be a loved family member - and exactly what behaviors are expected.  Securely fenced yard is strongly preferred!

KIDS:      Unknown, would have to be tested.

OTHER DOGS:    Yes, would have to be introduced to ensure compatibility.  Currently lives with a non-dominant female German Shepherd and does great.  Will butt his way in when his foster sister is getting attention. Previously lived with a Chihuahua who he grew very protective of (the Chi was his only family and the only love he had) and he was protective of his brother. Would be fine as an only dog or with another dog who is ok with sharing attention.

CATS:    Would have to be tested, but when tested in the shelter he appeared to be trainable.  He was interested and sniffed, did not chase. We think he would do well with cats but would need supervision.

Are you looking for a stunning large German Shepherd who just wants to love and be loved?  Are you willing to invest a little bit of time, patience and leadership training?
If so, SNOOPY may truly be your dream dog!

SNOOPY'S ADOPTION FEE: $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to save these dogs.  With vet and boarding expenses, our average expenditure per dog is over $450.  However, we work hard to keep the adoption fee at the 2005 level and then work hard to do fundraising to cover the rest.  The adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, monthly preventives, deworming and microchip.

Good with Dogs

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
