GINGER is a gorgeous tan/ginger and black German Shepherd girl who came from a puppy mill.  When she was spayed and given her shots, the vet discovered that her ovaries were "full of cysts" (fatty cysts, thank heavens not cancerous) and commented that she had been "bred and bred and bred" .... her whole life has been spent barefoot and pregnant!  She was a puppy-making machine and is one of two breeder dogs who were going to be shot if rescue didn't take them.

With the help of a wonderful foster home that agreed to foster BOTH girls, we were able to step in and take them.  Yet Ginger and Princess were luckier than most.  The puppy miller was at least somewhat kind to them while using both to constantly pump out money-making puppies.  Ginger is somewhat thin but was fed.  She also clearly had some exposure to people and other dogs, and is not in any way terrified.  Rather, she's hungry for affection!  She just wants to be part of a family, to belong somewhere, to be loved and cared for.   For years this sweet girl was just used to crank out high dollar puppies, to the point where her body was a mess.  We suspect that her last litter - which was recent! - was small and perhaps sickly.

What we were not told, and only discovered when we picked her up, is that Ginger is heartworm positive.  The puppy miller didn't give any shots, and clearly didn't use any heartworm preventive despite being in the Missouri countryside!!!  Ginger's recent litter of  puppies were born with heartworm, which will come as a shock to those unsuspecting families who bought them for a large sum of money!   (Her buddy Princess also has a medical issue the puppy miller forgot to mention - old injuries to the right side of her body, what appears to be blunt force trauma of some sort.)  Thankfully Ginger does not have any symptoms of heartworm so we know it is not terribly advanced, and she will start her heartworm treatment soon.

And now - now Ginger starts to really live!  Now she's in a loving foster home with other dogs and teenagers and a fenced yard.  Now she's an indoor dog and is getting all the comforts of a home and bed.  Now she's getting all the pets and hugs and love she wants.  Now she gets to go out and play, then come in and get loved on.  AND SHE'S THRILLED OUT OF HER MIND!  She's eating up the love and family.  That's all Ginger wants - a loving home and family.  She's not demanding, just hungry for love.

Ginger is housetrained and crate trained, and has a lovely temperament.  She's at a great age where she's energetic but not hyperactive or crazy!  She will be a perfect family dog for some very lucky family!

Ginger is living with the other puppy mill dog Princess in her current foster home, along with several other dogs of varying sizes (smallest is probably 25 lbs).  She's good with all of them, and in fact seems to be excited to figure out this sudden wealth of companionship, both human and doggie.  It's almost like watching a child who's never had anything suddenly inherit great riches - only these riches are in the form of love and family.

DOGS:               Yes, would like a doggie buddy  (has been around dogs as small as 25 lbs)
CATS:                Unknown, would have to be tested.  Probably not as she was known to kill chickens and was kept on a tether
KIDS:                 Have not seen her around small kids and would want to test, but believe she will do well.  Only caveat is the same as with any big dog - always supervise big dogs with small children!  Like any large dog, Ginger could easily knock over a small child accidentally in play, or while enthusiastically asking for love
IDEAL FAMILY:   A moderately active family who will love her, love her, love her!  In the words of the vet, this poor girl has been "bred and bred and bred".  She desperately wants to be loved, petted, loved.  FENCED YARD REQUIRED.  Ginger was known to kill chickens.

GINGER's ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

1. We're picky about our adopters. 
2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.  
   
3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
   
5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up? 
   
6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
