SCHATZIE is an adorable, medium-sized girl who is mostly German Shepherd but probably has a little bit of husky in her. She's a great size if you don't want a truly large dog. She's also "lap size" - which is where she'd prefer to be if she had her 'druthers! She's a sweet, loving little girl who was exhausted by her battle to stay alive but is now thrilled to be safe, sound and loved.
Schatzie was a stray at a very rural Kansas pound that routinely kills pets unless rescues step in. When a local rescue there called, we took this sweet girl to avoid that fate.
Her wonderful foster mom reports that ms. Schatzie is very sweet and appears to have been an outdoor dog who was thrown outside and totally ignored. She doesn't know much of anything yet - has no clue what toys are and it was almost a week before she'd even play catch with a stick with her foster mom. She doesn't know her own size and strength, and tends to be too enthusiastic (rough) in her greetings. She gets so excited she stands up on her hind legs and tries to grab at you.
But her foster reports she's also SUPER smart and very trainable! She watches every move her foster mom makes when in eyesight. She also responds well to verbal corrections and is instantly submissive -- when her foster lowers her voice, Schatzie corrects her behavior and stays that way for several hours. SHE WANTS TO PLEASE! The only time she doesn't respond is when she's overly excited, but we expect that to taper off as she feels more and more secure, and gets more traiing/guidance. What we're seeing is another case of humans who did nothing - no one ever cared and no one ever taught her what's expected and how to behave. All she needs is continued patience and gentle but firm correction, and she's going to be one AWESOME girl!!!!
She LOVES her doggie brother/sister - who are about her size - and they quickly established pack order with Schatzie right in the middle. We would love for her to have a doggie borther or sister to be her lifetime buddy!!! She doesn't like her crate but will go in it. She's also done very well on potty training, with only one accident. She quickly learned to use a doggie door to go in and out.
She can and will escape over a shorter fence, at least for now, and so she MUST have a 6 ft privacy fence. She's good on a leash and we're guessing she was probably a chained dog. She needs some leash manner reminders but is so smart that won't take long.
KIDS: She's good with kids - and all people! The only consideration around small children is that right now she still jumps up in excitement and could easily knock a small child over by accident. Until she's completely trained, she will have to be supervised around small kids to make sure no accidental knockdowns occur.
DOGS: She's great with other dogs. She was in a pen with strange dogs at the pound, and fit right in with the two dogs in the foster home, quickly establishing pack order (with her submissive to one and alpha over the other). We have not seen her around small dogs and that would have to be tested. However, we expect the same dynamic would likely occur.
CATS: She has a cat in her foster home, and for now they're still adjusting to each other. However, their first meeting went very well. Schatzie was inquisitive but made no effort to chase, and eventually settled down behind a chair while the cat slept on the sofa. Interestingly, the cat is a rescue cat who was seriously mauled by a dog and right now does NOT like dogs. The cat hisses at and does not want to be around the resident dogs, but was much less reluctant when introduced to Schatzie.
OVERALL: Ms. Schatzie is an adorable, sweet, loving little girl who's had a rough life and never been loved - and is now eager to give and get love! She's an awesome little girl and those who meet her are smitten with her sweetness. Are YOU the one lucky family to have her in your home and lives forever? To make her a beloved family member? To care for her and show her all the good things she never had? Is that YOU?
DOGS: YES, would love a doggie buddy!
CATS: Probably. Doing well so far with foster's cat
KIDS: Yes, though due to her roughness until trained she needs close supervision around small children
IDEAL FAMILY: A moderately active to active family with a securely fenced yard and a 6' privacy fence (she can and will jump/climb a lower fence)
If you're looking for a lovely and sweet young lady
who will love you forever,
SCHATZIE may be your ideal family member!
SCHATZIE's ADOPTION FEE: $250
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
