SADIE is a gorgeious light sable German Shepherd who is sweet, sweet, sweet and seems to love everyone! She adores people and would be a lap dog if you let her. She gets along with other dogs and really enjoys their company. She'd love a doggie buddy to play with but is respectful of the older dog in her foster home who is not playful, and doesn't bug him. She currently is in foster care with two kids (ages 8 and 11) and loves them madly. She has recently started sleeping with the kids in their bedrooms and loves it.
Sadie is a victim of the puppy mill "industry". She was owned by a puppy miller in rural Missouri (Missouri is the literal Puppy Mill Capitol of the U.S. -- just one large puppy broker called the Hunte Corporation supplies some 40% of all puppies to pet stores around the country and several years ago proudly announced buying a bigger and better incinerator).
The puppy miller moved out in the middle of the night, left town, and apparently took some dogs but left one male and one female on the streets to starve. Sadie was the female, and her milk had barely dried up. We agreed to take both the male and the female, but unfortunately local officials ignored our rescue offer and adopted the male out
un-neutered. We're praying he isn't in the hands of yet another puppy miller, stuck in yet another horrible life ;-( Please send all your good thoughts and prayers his way.
When we picked Sadie up, she was super skinny, totally confused, and had one broken ear. Broken ears are often typical of many puppy millers, who keep dogs in cages 24/7 and they don't always have room to stand up all the way.
We think Sadie's broken, half-floppy ear is adorable and a Badge of Courage. She survived the horrors of subhuman puppy millers who mistreated her, underfed her, used her as a puppy machine, and then threw her out to starve. And she remains incredibly sweet and loving despite it all!!
Sadie is still skinny but is picking up weight. Her coat is still somewhat rough but as she settles into a new home and family, adjusts to a new routine, and gets her nutrution back to normal her coat will shine. She needs to settle into the safety, security and love of a forever home!
Sadie had clearly had a litter of pups in the recent past, but her milk had dried up - it appears the puppy millers hung around just long enough to sell the puppies, make money, then dump the parents to starve or the taxpayers to kill. Fortunately Sadie avoided that fate, though barely. She is now safe, spayed, and will never again contribute to the horrendous GSD overpopulation and the tens of thousands of GSD deaths every year.
Sadie is truly a loving, sweet, unassuming dog. She's not exaclty submissive but is certainly non-dominant. She's undemanding and gentle. She wants to play but is respectful of other dogs' space. She would dearly love a doggie play buddy so she can have the puppyhood she never got to have.
What's more, Sadie was an incredible momma! We know because she was at the home of one of our fosters for a few hours while in transit. They were fostering a litter of GSD pups from a pregnant mom we took in. The mom and several of her pups had just been adopted out the day before, and 4 pups were scheduled to go home in a few days. Sadie jumped right into their room and immediately took charge - corrected the rowdy guys, cleaned them, talked to them. The pups instantly responded to her motherly ministrations and meekly obeyed her.
Sadie is great with the foster home's kids, dog and even their cat. After initial introductions, the cat and Sadie now sometimes curl up on the same bed together! We recommend making slow, proper introductions, as always, but once that's done it appears Sadie can live with just about any type of animal.
We have not seen Sadie around toddlers or infants, but we believe she will do well. As with any large dog, her family MUST supervise her interaction with very small children. Any large dog can easily knock a small child over accidentally, in play or simply in rambunctiousness.
Whoever is lucky enough to get Sadie is going to have an eternal sweetheart in their family and home! She's a gem of a girl and is eagerly waiting to meet her forever family who will take her into their home and hearts FOREVER - so she's never again thrown out on the streets but is forever loved and treasured.
DOGS: YES. Would love a doggie buddy. A home with an appropriate doggie playmate (medium to large dog) is strongly preferred.
CATS: Yes. Proper introductions required. Lives with a cat in her foster home
KIDS: Yes. In foster home with 8 and 11 yr olds. Very small children will have to be tested. Supervision required with very small children, as with any large dog who can accidentally knock a child over
IDEAL FAMILY: A loving, gentle, fun family who will treasure her and have a doggie buddy for her to play with. Securely fenced yard preferred (currently in foster care in a 4 ft fence and has not shown any desire to jump the fence so far)
If you're looking for a gorgeous, young, trainable German Shepherd
who will love you forever,
SADIE may be your dream girl!
SADIE's ADOPTION FEE: $300 This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend
over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
