HALLIE is a stunning black-and-tan coated German Shepherd girl who comes from the show world - and it shows!  She is absolutely gorgeous, is a lover, and just wants a family to call her own.  Hallie never knew love until a few months ago when she came into the MOGS program and went to her loving, dedicated foster home - where she's learned what a loving  home is.  She's SO grateful and happy to be safe and part of a family!

Hallie's story is a true miracle. A rescuer took her cat to the vet and while waiting, overheard a woman in one of the exam rooms tell the vet she wanted her dog put down "because she's shy and I can't do anything more with her."  As the vet left the room to get the shot that would kill Hallie, the rescuer asked permission to speak to the owner.  The vet was clearly displeased, but finally - grudgingly - shook his head OK.

The rescuer went into the room and saw a breathtaking, healthy German Shepherd - Hallie.  She was stunned. Hallie looked scared, but perfectly healthy.  The rescuer began talking to the owner, who was a show woman and kept only show dogs.  She had only had Hallie for 8 months and had gotten her from another show person who "couldn't do anything with her."  Hallie had been passed around from show person to show person and now was to be killed.

The owner agreed to let the rescuer have Hallie, but expressed doubts anyone could do anything with her and said she would take her back and have her euthanized if the rescuer couldn't handle her.  All this was because "she's too shy."

It turned out that Hallie spent all day in an outdoor kennel, was let loose with other dogs for a few hours in the evening, and then spent all night in a kennel.  She was kenneled approx. 20-22 hrs a day.  She was exercised and fed, but not loved.  She was not part of a family.  She didn't have the right temperament for the show ring, and so she was discarded time after time until one owner finally decided to kill her.

In less than half an hour, Hallie was in a temporary foster home with other dogs and a cat.  She was wonderful with all of them, including both small and large dogs.  She took to everyone right away, and while a little shy around new humans she warmed up quickly.  She spent only a few days in that temporary home while waiting for her foster home, but she stole everyone's heart in just minutes.  She walked well on leash and was well-behaved both on and off leash.

And she's continued to do exceptionally well in her foster home -- she gets along with the small dogs, ADORES her life now, and is no trouble at all.  As a mature dog, she's past the puppy stage of excess energy to burn and is a wonderful companion to have around.  She's had a few bumps along the way as she's learned how to be loved, how to be part of a family, and how to lead a normal, happy dog life.   She is a quiet dog - undemanding, unassuming - but once she was no longer forced to do show ring work, she instantly settled down.  All she wants is love.

The "shyness" that almost got her killed simply hasn't appeared in our care.  She's a quiet dog  and a gentle one, but we've dealt with hundreds of cases of shyness and fear - and Hallie doesn't even rank in that category.  She's just a little uncertain of new situations and people, simply because she's not yet familiar with the big wide world out there!

Hallie has the sloped lines that American show breeders have created in recent years.  It may create an "elegant" line in the show ring, but it also means her new family must take care to keep her weight down, give her high quality joint supplements, and generally pay attention to her joints and hips as she ages.

Hallie is a living doll and a sweet, quiet, undemanding dog who will make someone an outstanding lifetime friend, family member and companion.  She knows now what life with love is like, and she's reveling in it - she wants to love you and for you to love her!

Are YOU the one lucky family who will get to have this stunning, sweet beauty join your family?  Are YOU the lucky ones she will love?

DOGS:                   Yes.  Seems to be good with all sizes
CATS:                    Yes.  Showed no aggression
KIDS:                     Probably.  Have not seen her around infants but believe she will do well.  Would have to be tested
IDEAL FAMILY:        A moderately active family with a somewhat gentle or quiet lifestyle.  She would not do well in a chaotic, rowdy environment.

If you're looking for a gorgeous, low-key, sweet German Shepherd
who will love you forever,
HALLIE may be your dream dog!

HALLIE's ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

Good with Dogs

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
