MARIE is not only a stunning beuuty, she's also one exceptional girl!  At just under 3 yrs old she has survived abandonment, starvation to the point of death, heartworm, and being pregnant while starved.  Yet she's still one of THE sweetest, THE most loving dogs we've ever met.  She will steal your heart the minute you meet her!

Marie was found under a family's porch in a rural area in the dead of winter.  She seemed almost dead and although the family kindly wanted to help her, they didn't know how to.  They posted her on Facebook and a MOGS volunteer stepped up to take her in.  When our volunteer got Marie home, she took stock - poor Marie weighed a mere 23 lbs and her waist measured only 3.5".  By all rights this little girl should have been dead.  Marie now weighs over 40 lbs, needs to put on a little more weightand how she survived at less than half body weight in the cold is a mystery.

All stops were pulled out to try and put weight on her. She ate like a tiger, perked up, gained good energy, felt much better - but still didn't gain any weight.  After a few weeks she seemed to look different and it turned out that starving little Marie was PREGNANT!  She was too far along and her body condition too poor to do anything but allow her to have the pups.  The biggest concern at that point was then the health of the pups since Marie was in such rough shape.  But after weeks of high nutrition food and supplements 8 puppies were born - all fat, happy and completely healthy!  Everyone was elated.  Once the puppies were weaned and adopted out, Marie began to gain good weight and all was well.

Marie is now healthy and glowing with vitality.  Amazing Ms. Marie is ready, eager and just waiting for a forever home and her very own loving family!

Marie is amazing with everyone. She loves people of all ages so would do well with children.  She generally gets along with other dogs and has lived with a pack of all ages and sizes.  However, true to her breed she still requires strong leadeship as she may show some dominance with small dogs.  She's fine with cats.  Marie is an English Setter and her natural tracking instincts tend to kick in if she senses she's off leash or not confined - she'll put her nose to the ground and is gone.  She's a scent dog and, true to her breed, she loves to roam to try and find a bird.  For that reason Marie MUST have a well-fenced yard, preferably 6 ft tall.

Marie is also a homebody.  She's a true cuddlebug,  and loves to curl up on the couch with you and just chill.  She adores her people and wants to be with you.

Overall, Marie is a darn near perfect dog:  loving, sweet, well-mannered in the house, nicely energetic, gets along with everyone, a real cuddlebug.  All you have to remember is that she's a true scent dog and given half a chance to go roaming, she will.

Marie did have heartworm and has been treated on the "slow kill" method.  That method needs to be continued for several more months and involves a simple process of giving her a very small dose of liquid medicine once a week.  Yet when you take her for a walk she's full of life and energy.  She's great outdoors and great indoors.  Note on housetraining:  Marie is mostly housetrained and learned to use a doggie door quickly. She will be easily trained the rest of the way.

Are YOU the very lucky family who will share Marie's life?  Only one family will have that opportunity.  And we intend to be very particular about her new home and family - she's been through enough cruelty and suffering for ten lifetimes and deserves only the VERY best.  Are you it?

DOGS:                      Yes, loves other dogs.  May not respond well to some small dogs, needs to be tested if there are small dogs in the household
CATS:                       Yes, fine with cats
KIDS:                        Yes, great with people of all ages
IDEAL FAMILY:          A loving, active family with a fenced yard who will love and spoil this girl who's been through hell and back!!  A family who will make her an integral part of their family circle and take care of her for life.

If you're looking for a beautiful young lady
who gets along with everyone (except birds),
and is sweet as pie,
MARIE may be your dream dog!

MARIE's ADOPTION FEE:   $250
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

Special Needs: liquid heartworm medication once a week for several more months

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
