About Ruby [6-13]

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: 250.00
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Black with Tan, Yellow or Fawn
  • Current Age: 14 Years 1 Month (best estimate)
RUBY is a young, gorgeous, and incredibly sweet GSD who probably has a little bit of either husky or collie mixed in ;-)    She is still very skinny but starting to fill out and will be a stunning girl when she's at full weight.

Ruby came from an abusive home.  She was totally neglected - almost to the point of being starved, and her coat was in very poor condition.  But even worse, she was clearly abused.  She cowered at every movement, shrunk away at raised hands and loud voices, and generally just wanted away from humans.  Other animals were her comfort zone!  It broke our hearts to see her hang her head and back away, waiting for something bad at the hands of the people around her.

She was in a very loving foster home for a short time while at the shelter and made good progress, but then came to MOGS and is now making is making great progress.  She is getting terrific socialization - she gets to go to work with her foster mom sometimes at a vet's office and is surrounded by both loving people and animals at all times.   She adores her playmates - her foster siblings and the neighbor's chihuahua - and LOVES playing in the water!  Watch out - if there's a pond, pool, kiddie pool, lake or deep water hole around she'll joyously jump in and have a ball!

So our sweet Ruby is slowly learning that humans can be kind, that love is all around her, and that life is a grand adventure.   She's still most comfortable when playing outside where she engages in play with her foster parents and playfully bounces around the backyard.   You can see her abandon her fear and give in to the sunny energy of a normal youngster who's never known abuse.

Ruby still has a way to go on her journey back from abuse.  When she's indoors, she still tends to cower from her foster parents and has her "safe" spots in the foster home where she will quietly cuddle up to escape.   All she needs is time and patience, which will eventually convince her that indoors and outdoors she is safe and loved - and can relax.

Ruby has great leash manners, and despite her abusive past and her fears has never shown the slightest aggression.   In most ways she's a typical young dog with lots of energy and a tendency to chew on household items. She loves kong toys and nyla bones which help with her chewing habit.

Ruby MUST have at least one other dog in her new home, so she can continue to learn by example.A fenced yard is also a must.

Her family needs to understand it will take a little while to gain Ruby's trust -- but once you have it, you'll never know a more loving or loyal dog!  With patience and love Ruby will be the perfect addition to any home:  sweet, loving, joyous.  She needs that certain someone who has the depth of understanding and the willingness to take her the rest of  the way on her journey to the good life -- to trust, confidence, security, love.

VERY SHY:   Ruby is a healthy, gorgeous, and super sweet girl who is also still very, very shy.  Some people might consider her special needs" because at this time she won't come up and give you doggie hugs or kisses - she'll retreat to her safe spots in the house.  She will get there one day, just not today.  All she needs is patience and love as she continues to learn love.  She's off to a great start and has already come a very long way.  She just needs more time to absorb and really trust that you really do love her and won't be mad at her, punish her, hurt her, yell at her, or push her around for being indoors.   You need to let life flow around her in the house, and simply wait for her to approach you.  It will click with her and she'll shyly sneak up close to you or give you a gentle kiss.  That's the day your heart will do flip-flops!  To help speed that day, Ruby needs lots of normal interaction and socialization (such as going to Petsmart, the park, the drive-through, etc). She cann't be forced into situations but must be gradually introduced to new places and new people as her confidence builds.  You must give her time to trust you -- with the understanding it may take months for her to show her you  normal doggie affection.

DOGS:       Yes, MUST have another dog in the home.  Good with small and large dogs
CATS:        Unknown.  Would have to be tested.
KIDS:        Yes - respectful kids who will not overwhelm her
IDEAL FAMILY:   an active family with at least one other playful dog and a fenced yard.  A family who will regularly take her to new places and socialize her regularly as they help her complete her journey to a normal, loving home life.  A family willing to wait patiently for the day when she bounces right up to them and gives them that huge doggie kiss ;-)

If you have a big heart for a sweetheart of a girl who's just learning what love is, and just needs a lot of TLC to understand she's safe and loved,
RUBY is the perfect dog for you!

RUBY's ADOPTION FEE: $250
This fee covers only part what we spend on vet and boarding costs for the dogs we save.  At minimum it includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip.  In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

Good with Dogs

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
