HANS is a GORGEOUS senior GSD with a stunning plush coat.  At the moment, he's thoroughly enjoying a newfound sense of freedom and get-out-and-go!  He seems to love, love, love his walks and outings, and is friendly to all humans.  He's a stunning boy who needs a place for the last years of his life - a family with whom he can explore the big, wide world he was never able to see, a family who will love him instead of treat him like a lawn ornament.  Hans needs someone who will give him a place to lay his head and be comfortable!

Hans has not had a good life.  Some years ago he was adopted from a rural pound by a local woman.  Tragically, she kept him locked up outdoors in a pen 24/7.  He was lonely and isolated, and got little exercise (he's overweight and we;re putting him on a diet).  The woman passed away and Hans went to live with her son.  Once again he was thrown outdoors by himself 24/7 to live in a pen.  Hans went from one bad situation to another bad situation - completely isolated, horribly lonely.  The amazing thing is that somehow he kept his sanity all those years and was able to cope with the extreme loneliness of having no family, no love, no siblings to share his life with.

And now Hans is ready to bust out and enjoy life!

But the son has medical problems, can't take care of Hans anymore, and the grandson contacted us for help.  He didn't want to take Hans to a pound so we stepped in and agreed to take Hans into our program, while the kind-hearted grandson ontributes to his boarding cost.

Sadly, due to a lack of people willing to open their homes to foster, Hans is in boarding.  It's heartbreaking, because the sooner Hans is in a home and can revel in having a family and soft bed, the better!   He VERY much needs a foster or adoptive home, so if you've ever considered fostering THIS is the time!

Meanwhile, Hans remains in boarding and we will be learning more about him gradually.

Hans has been an outdoor dog since at least 2006, and is not housetrained.  He was kept in an outdoor pen by himself all his life and is full of joy at just taking walks or playing in the play yard at the boarding faclity.   He seems to love attention and is eager to get up and go-go-go, sniff-sniff-sniff and explore-explore-explore!  It's fun to watch his almost puppy-like eagerness while he captures the good times he was never allowed to have.

Although Hans is 9 years old, he's in excellent health and wants to grab life for all it's worth.  When he was moved to the son's house after his owner died and was again forced to live alone outdoors in a pen 24/7, he began barking to the point where others complained.  The son put a bark collar on him -- but unfortunately never bothered to take it off, change the position, or adjust it.  As a result Hans has a large wound on his neck (see picture) where the 24/7 contact with his skin and the constant electric shocks to one spot around the clock injured him severely.  If the grandson hadn't visited to help his parents, we shudder to think what would have happened to Hans' neck with that collar on 24/7.

Hans has been to the vet, his neck has been shaved, the area has been treated, and he's on anti-biotics.  The wound needs to heal from the inside out to avoid infection, and we'll be bathing his neck with hydrogen peroxide regularly.  Thankfully, the vet says his neck will heal well. In the meantime, Hans is on a harness instead of a regular collar and leash so we can take him for his walks.

Because Hans lived in an outdoor pen, he's never know the love and companionship of a real family in his entire life.   His manners of all sorts need work - leash manners, general house manners, etc.  Plus, he's desperate to run free and strtetch his legs like never before.  Hans will need a securely fenced yard so he doesn't go wandering in his excitement!

As a senior, Hans is in many ways the ideal dog:  no longer a crazy, hyper kid yet with the energy and good health to live a great life.  Hans is a little unique in that he seems almost puppy-like in his outlook, so you also get the joy of watching him discover freedom without the puppy chaos!

We're looking for a very special home for Hans.  No more chain link jail cell for Hans!!  He needs a family who's willing to teach him house training, general house manners, and walking,  We think he'll learn v-e-r-y fast (that's our experience with the older dogs who have endured so much hardship).  He also needs a family who will show him the good life of a beloved inside dog.  HANS DESERVES A SOFT BED AND PLENTY OF COMPANY!  He's earned it.  He's served his time in jail for the "crime" of being a dog - and now we intend to find him the love, tenderness, companionship, soft bed and freedom he's always deserved.

Sadly, Hans also has a 6 yr old cousin named Bruce who will probably be coming into our program soon.   Bruce has a little more freedom than Hans did, but not much.  The great news is that both boys can put the bad old days behind them now - they're on their way to a whole new life of normalcy, family, love and being valued.

Are YOU the lucky one who will bring this gem of a boy into your lives and home?  Hans will bring you so much fun, so much joy of discovery, and so much lightness of spirit that you'll just laugh!  His joy is infectious ;-)

DOGS:                      Unknown, we will be testing.  We believe he's probably ok with large dogs at least.
CATS:                       Unknown, would have to be tested
KIDS:                        Unknown, was not around small children, would have to be tested
IDEAL FAMILY:       A family with the get up and go to walk Hans every day and expose him to the big wide world around him, take him everywhere and let him revel in the freedom of being out of a pen / jail cell.  A family with the patience to do the basic training he needs (potty training, general house manners) - a short term effort for a long term result of incredible love and loyalty!

If you're looking for a stunning, mature German Shepherd
with lots of life left who will enjoy every second of life and
be eternally grateful for your love, a soft bed and a home,
HANS may be your heart dog!
If you'd like to show him that humans can be loving and kind,
fill out an adoption application today!

HAN's ADOPTION FEE:   $250
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
