About Chivea (female) | |
|
Chivea (pronounced "Shuh-vay-a") is a GORGEOUS, petite young German Shepherd who lived in a rural area and started chasing farm animals! We think it was really because she was bored, but we don't recommend her around farm animals.
So Chivea is now in our rescue and is looking for an active, loving family - with another large dog to play with her. She loves, loves, loves to play hard, long and rough! While we think she could live well with a small dog, she's too big and plays too rough for a small dog to be her only "buddy"!
Chivea is on the small side and is a great size for those who don't want a really large dog. She is crate trained and was house trained after a short time in her foster home.
She's a gorgeous chestnut and black color with a sleek, soft coat. But the best part is how VERY sweet she is - an exuberant youngster who wants to play and love and enjoy life! She LOVES life as an indoor dog and part of the family - it was new to her but she doesn't want any part of being an outdoor dog anymore (we universally find this to be true with so-called outdoor dogs).
While she's clearly adjusting to her new "city life", and is a bit uncertain at first in some situations, she adjusts quickly and has been good in every situation we've put her in to date. This includes an all-weekend Pet Expo, where at first she was shy but quickly started having a great time with all the people and other dogs. All she needs is continued exposure to every day situations while they become natural to her, and she's going to be one of the best-tempered dogs around. She's been introduced to several new households lately and did superbly each time - playing with the resident dogs and loving the people.
Chivea is FAST and AGILE - she'd make a great jogging buddy, and probably a good agility dog. (She is not suitable for SAR work as her ball drive is non-existent.) She currently lives with a large male German Shepherd and they play hard, rough and non-stop.
Chivea ADORES other dogs and is a big-time player. She must have another large dog to play with. She and her large GSD foster brother race around the yard, chase each other through the house, and generally go, go, go. She needs to have a doggie brother or sister to pal around with, play with, and crash with. Her play buddy must be a larger dog who's willing to play long, hard and rather rough.
Chivea's former owners never gave her the standard monthly heartworm preventive, so at just under two years old she was heartworm positive. She has been treated for it and is more than ready to get on with the rest of her fun-filled life!
Chivea ia a fence jumper when bored (i.e., when outdoors without a human or a large dog to play with). She can clear fences below 6' without blinking, and she can clear a 6 ft chain link fence by a combination of jumping and climbing. We haven't seen her in a 6 ft privacy fence, but suspect that as long as the smooth side is facing in she would probably not get over it.
FENCE: Must have a 6 ft privacy fence, preferably smooth side facing in
DOGS Yes! Must have a large dog to play with or she'll be much too bored
CATS: Yes, appears to do well with cats (was tested in a vet's office)
KIDS: Would need to do further testing but has been fine with all kids she's met so far. There are no children in the foster home
IDEAL FAMILY: An active family who will continue her training and guidance, and give her significant daily exercise and mental stimulation! A fenced yard is essential, 6 ft PRIVACY fence as she's very agile and could easily clear a shorter fence if she wants to
CHIVEA's ADOPTION FEE: $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
