JAG is an absolutely stunning, show-quality German Shepherd whose stance at rest almost leaves you breathless! And watching him trot around the yard is a thing of beauty - so fluid he almost looks like a Tennesse Walking Horse. He's classic, almost perfect German Shepherd in shape and proportion.
Jag was a neglected, starving stray in a bad part of town when Animal Control finally caught him. He was stand-offish at the shelter at first, scared and uncertain, and would move to the opposite side of the kennel when you tried to talk to him. But he soon began to warm up and started trusting more. By the time we pulled him out of the shelter, he seemed to understand he was at least safe.
Unfortunately due a lack of people willing to foster, Jag is in boarding. We hate seeing him in this kennel situation, especially since he's a big boy and loves to explore and run in the yard. But at least he's safe from the killing room, and we're getting to know him a little bit better. He likely has some dominant tendencies, but appeared to do okay with several large dogs we tested him with. He was inappropriate in his attempt to play with the young female GSD, but it appeared to be ignorance of how to play well and not aggression. We're still trying to determine his attitude to small dogs, which seems mixed. At the shelter, an adoption fell through because Jag picked up their small dog in his mouth. But he didn't harm the small dog and was easily "called off". And when we tested him through chain link fence with small dogs, he didn't show any aggression (more disinterest). Howver, face-to-face is what tells the tale, and we will be trying more of that soon. It may be that by picking up the small dog in his mouth, he was simply being inappropriate out of ignorance and lack of any training but that has to be tested. Cats are unknown and would have to be tested.
Jag really seems to like people and so far hasn't met anyone he doesn't like. He adores his walks, is good in his kennel, and absolutely LOVES to carry around an old (or new) ball in his mouth!
Right now we're recommending older kids for Jag, simply because of his size and strength - he doesn't know his own strength and would easily knock down a small child.
Jag was heartworm positive and has been treated. He's on "crate rest" until the end of February as part of his recuperation, and we expect his personality to continue emerging as his recurperation period goes on.
Whoever gets Jag as a forever family member, is going to be the talk of the neighborhood - and anywhere else you take this stunning boy! He turns heads wherever he goes, and we're looking for an extraordnary famly for him - a family who will commit to him forever and show him all the love and kindness he never knew til now.
DOGS: Large dogs, yes. Small dogs, still being tested
CATS: Unknown, would have to be tested
KIDS: Unknown, would have to be tested
IDEAL FAMILY: An active family who wants and can handle a big, strong and untrained German Shepherd boy who needs training
If you're willing to train a truly stunning German Shepherd
who will be your best bud forever,
JAG may be your boy!
JAG's ADOPTION FEE: $300 This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend
over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.
