CHIEF is a beautiful young man just longing for his very own home and family!  A stray in a high kill city pound, Chief was totally untrained and unmannered.  He was literally bouncing off the walls at being confined so long, and would jump up on and mouth everyone.  But he's made huge progress!!  He's calm now and is so grateful for his walks and the love he's getting!

Unfortunately due to a lack of people willing to foster, Chief was in boarding for over 3 months.  He finally accepted the fact that he was safe and loved, and understood he was  ok.  He's now been in a foster home for a month and is doing very well.  There are no other animals in the home, and it is an adults-only home.  Chief is loving and relaxed, and his foster parents love him dearly.  One behavior they have noted is that Chief seems startled sometimes by his foster dad:  when walking out on the deck suddenly, or once or twice even walking across the hall to another room.  At those times, Chief has lunged as if a stranger were in the home.  This behavior is settling down some, but we believe this is a combination of factors.  First, Chief was probably abused by a man.  Second, he was likely never in a home and is getting his very first taste of having a family and 'territory'.  Third, he's still very much a puppy at just about 1 yr old.  Fourth, he was obviously never taught anything by his former owners, so he is confused about what appropriate protectionism is.   Bottom line:  Chief needs both strong leadership and good training!

For this reason, we do NOT recommend Chief right now for homes with small children.  He seemed fine the one time we saw him around children, but we can not predict how he would react with visiting children run in and out.   Due to his terrible owners who never bothered to teach him anything, he is still confused about what is appropriate protectionism and what isn't on his home territory.

Chief is going to make someone a spectacular (and stunning) buddy and lifelong companion.  He's loving and sweet, and is so appreciastive of your attention, ear rubs and any other time/love you give him.  Chief just needs someone who will teach him what life is really about - someone who will give him good canine leadership and teach him the things all young German Shepherds need to know.

We dog tested Chief with another large male dog and he did fine.  We haven't been able to test him with small dogs or cats yet, and that would have to be done.  We have not seen him around small kids, but think he will probably do fine.  The only issue is likely to be his size (large) and energy level (rambunctious) - if not properly supervised, Chief can and will knock over a small child during play.

Chief must have a 6 ft privacy fence, as he is way too interested in getting over the foster's 4 ft chain link fence!

Chief went to a big adoption event on March 6 and was wonderful!  Despite the chaos he was relaxed and comfortable, and did well with the other dogs.  We still have not seen him around small dogs, however, and that would have to be tested.

DOGS:       Yes, if properly introduced
CATS:        Unknown, would have to be tested
KIDS:        Have not seen around kids, would have to be tested.  Would definitely need supervision due to size and rambunctiousness
IDEAL FAMILY:   an active family who will takek the time and patience to train Chief and help him understand love, kindness, and manners!

If you're looking for a gorgeous, young, trainable German Shepherd
who will love you forever,
CHIEF may be your ideal family member!

CHIEF's ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save. On average we spend over $450 on each dog. We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then. We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit. At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip. In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
