SHAY is an incredibly sweet, beautiful youngter who has one of the best temperaments you'll ever find!   She's a true lover - she LOVES people, LOVES other dogs, LOVES cats (her best play buddy is a cat) and LOVES to play.  She also LOVES the water - she would adore having a doggie pool or sprinkler to play in, and a pond or lake would be sheer heaven.  But be warned: she even likes mud puddles ;-)  She'll happily splash in them and then present her muddy self to you with infinite pride at her accomplishment.  In a word, she's a charmer who will melt your heart.

Shay is a purebred German Shepherd who happens to be "soft-eared" - an inherited trait that simply means her ears don't stand up.  They're adorable!  But make no mistake, she's a true German Shepherd and for all her gentleness, Shay will protect her yard and home.

Shay ended up in a private shelter as a very young puppy and was adopted to loving family.  Unfortunately her owners had to move and couldn't take her, and the private shelter wouldn't take her back, so we stepped in to help.  And we intend to find her a VERY special forever home!

What's interesting is that every one of the many soft-eared GSDs we've had in the MoGS program has been a sweet-natured dog - and Shay is no exception!  She's super sweet, adores her doggie brothers and cat sister, and loves humans.  She is shy with strangers at first but warms up quickly and is soon sitting at your feet hoping for attention.  She lived with and loved the older kids and adults in an active, busy household.

She'd love to have an active family who will play with her, take her on outings, and make her an integral part of their family forever.  She gets a bit shy around young kids and simply goes to her crate.  She doesn't show any aggression at all, and we believe that if she had more experience with / exposure to small children she would learn to do just fine.  For now, she's probably best in a home with slightly older children.

Shay is a sensitive girl and wants a family who won't yell at her - if you raise your voice to her she'll back away and not come near you for a while.  She needs someone who understands she's sensitive and needs to be treated gently.  She plays like any young GSD, and roughhouses with all the animals, but she looks to her humans for kindness.

Shay MUST go to a family with at least one other dog to both play with.

Shay has a medical condition that's easily managed.  She's an EPI dog - meaning she has a condition called EPI, or Exocrine Panreactic Insufficiency, in which the panreas lacks essential enzymes that  absorb the nutrients from food.  It's a fairly common condition that tens of thousands of dogs have, and is also a human condition.  Without the proper enzymes, EPI dogs can eat and eat - and still starve.  The body doesn't process the food and the dog will start losing weight.  Shay's condition first surfaced at the age of 3 months and she's doing just fine!  Her EPI is easily managed by using an enzyme powder that's easily available at Nature's Pantry and you simply sprinkle it on her food.  It costs about $20 per month, but SHAY'S OWNER WILL PAY FOR HER ENZYMES FOR LIFE.  It will also be best if she stays on the food she's currently on (Nature's Domain), as food changes can sometimes be hard on an EPI dog's system.  So although Shay is an EPI dog, she's just like the thousands of other EPI dogs out there:  otherwise healthy as a horse and leads an entirely normal life.

Only one VERY lucky family will know the incredible love of this sweet girl for years to come!  Is that you?

DOGS:
yes, she MUST have at least one other dog in the home!
CATS:
yes, her best play buddy was the cat and she'd LOVE to have a cat
KIDS:
yes, she's fine, just big and rambunctious.  Shy around small kids so probably best right now with slightly older kids
IDEAL FAMILY:
an active family with at least one other dog, and hopefully a cat.  A family who understands she's a gentle soul and needs a gentle but active and loving family who will love her forever!

If you're looking for a gorgeous and incredibly sweet young girl
who will love you unconditionally,
SHAY's your girl!

SHAY's ADOPTION FEE:   $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet, board and rehab the dogs we save.  On average we spend over $450 on each dog.  We made a decision to keep our adoption fee at the 2005 level even though vet prices have doubled and tripled since then.  We are constantly fundraising to cover the deficit.  At minimum, your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip.  In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

More about Shay (in 2013)

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids

Special Needs: Pancreatic enzymes for EPI condition. Currently on "Pet Essentials" from Flora Company. Former owner has offered to pay for life. (currently about $20/month).

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
