More Information:

Franz (new name "Max") was adopted by the Tansley family on 10/6/12. Congratulations and good luck to Max and the Tansley family!!

FRANZ is a classic black-and-tan German Shepherd boy who is full of life and fun!  He's still a puppy at approx. 18 months old, and you can tell he's never had any training.  He jumps on you out of pure joy to see you, and he mouths as he plays.  All this boy needs is TRAINING and LOVE!

Franz came from a high kill pound in southern Missouri, in the heart of puppy mill country.  His owner went to jail and a relative was supposed to come get Franz.   The pound sent other dogs to their death while waiting for the relative to come for Franz, since Franz was taking up kennel space.  The relative never bothered to show up, and Franz was then scheduled to be killed.  We stepped in, even though we have no fosters and no money to board him.  We simply couldn't allow him to die because of irresponsible breeding and irresponsible owners.

So Franz is now on his quest of a lifetime:  a loving, committed, active FOREVER FAMILY!  He simply needs what all German Shepherds need ... a family who will be good leaders, be loving and at the same time firm, set boundaries, teach him manners, and love him beyond imagining!  In return, he'll be your loyal companion and protector for life.

OTHER DOGS:  Franz is good with other dogs, though he has no play manners yet and gets waaaaay excited waaaay fast.  He needs supervision while he learns to gentle down, appropriate play, etc.

CATS:  Franz is interested in cats but appears to be trainable.  This would have to be tested further.  He displayed no interest in the cats roaming the shelter building, but he was interested in an outdoor cat at the boarding facility.

KIDS:  To be tested.  The only problem we foresee is that he's a big dog and very rambunctious, so he could knock a small child over by accident.   Would need supervision around small children while he learns to be more controlled in his enthusiasm.

IDEAL HOME:   an active family who will love him enough to train him, and be patient with his puppy behaviors!   He would enjoy having a doggie buddy to play with!

If you're looking for an intelligent, lively and loving classic GSD,
and you're willing to train a youngster,
FRANZ is the guy!

FRANZ's ADOPTION FEE:  $300
This fee covers a portion of the vet and boarding expenses for the dogs we save.  It includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies, distemper/parvo and bordatella vaccinations, deworming and microchip.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
