DEMI is such a pretty girl!  Her pictures don't show how pretty she is - she's one of those dogs who just don't photograph well.  She's a super loving girl who is also a strong and independent lady!  She loves attention, loves to have her belly rubbed, and is starting to play bow and get the "zoomies"!   She loves her family and loves life.  She is sweet, affectionate and really wants to be around you -- yet doesn't demand attention by pestering you constantly.  She is not a jumper or a "pesterer", but a quiet loving presence in your household.  She is crate trained, loves her crate and will spend long times in it without complaining when needed, then be glad for her time with you when you get home!  She is both playful and quietly independent.  All in all, she's a rather dignified girl who likes quiet loving and attention!

True to her breeds (which we're guessing at) she's very intelligent and can be stubborn.  She knows commands such as sit, down, etc but sometimes doesn't want to do them.  Like most dogs, she needs a good canine leader.  When she knows she has a leader, she bows her head and tries to figure out what you want - very sweet to watch when you consider how intelligent and loving she is.  When corrected she responds well, and after just a few times seems to 'get it.'  We taught her to wait at the door for permission to come in or go out, for instance, and she "got it" by the third or fourth time.  The same was true with her kennel - she initially came bolting right out, but now sits and waits to be released.  She's a smart cookie and a fast learner.

Demi has such a regal head and stance that she looks like a queen standing there -- and with other dogs she often likes to be the queen bee.  She does fine with most other dogs the majority of the time, but appears to have a "trigger" when startled or caught off guard.  When that happens she over-reacts and will become aggressive.  We're working on desensitizing her to sudden and unexpected movements.  In situations with high arousal potential (such as hard play between dogs, chasing squirrels, etc) Demi would need to be closely watched and controlled until she gets past this.   It's possible she could live with another dog who has just the right personality, but her ideal home is probably as an only dog or, at minimum, a very submissive large dog.  Demi will love you, play with you and hang out with you.  If you're looking for a calm, mellow, non-hyper/non-jumpy dog who is still lively and lots of fun, Demi is a perfect fit for you.

She's a very pretty girl and just recently got into a foster home after months in boarding.  The foster home noted immediately that she's calm, sweet, independent.  She loves her crate but also enjoys chilling out on the floor next to the bed.  She hates to have her toenails trimmed, is housetrained, and likes to just hang out.

Demi has had a tough time.  She originally ended up in a rescue who adopted her as an outdoor dog.  She lived with anther dog, but one very hot day they got into a fight on a while in a pen together outside.  Officials described the pen as much too small for the two dogs.  A visiting teenage boy - well intentioned but reckless - went in to stop it.  We think he was trying to impress his girlfriend.  He put his hands in between the dogs and was bitten.  No one knows which dog bit, and the young man was bitten only because he stepped in the middle of a fight in a small pen without knowing anything about how to safely break up a dog fight.  But the family promptly decided that Demi was newest addition to the family so she would go - the old "last in, first out" rule.   Without batting an eye they dumped her in the pound, knowing full well that the pound would kill her.   We received the call literally 2 hours before she was to die and although we had no room, we felt it was unfair for her to die due to a series of circumstances all created by careless humans.

So now Demi is searching for her forever family!  No more being dumped or abandoned.  No more uncertainty.  Just love, love, love and security - someone who appreciates a sweet, calm, loving, strong, intelligent and undemanding dog!

DOGS:    a great only dog, may be best as an only dog.  Over-reacts when startled or in high arousal situations with other dogs.  Currently working on this with her.
CATS:    yes.  Was fine with cats in foster home
KIDS:    yes.  Did fine with visiting small children.  Would want to test this further if there are small children in the household.
IDEAL HOME:   a moderate-to-low activity household who appreciates her calm, loving, and independent personality,

If you're looking for a terrific dog who is loving, fun, undemanding,
calm, and independent all rolled up into one,
and if you can provide good leadership,
DEMI's a match made in heaven!

DEMI's ADOPTION FEE:  $200   This fee covers a portion of the vet and boarding expenses for the dogs we save.  It includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies, distemper/parvo and bordatella vaccinations, deworming and microchip.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
