About Sally

  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Brown/Chocolate with Tan
  • Current Age: 13 Years 2 Months (best estimate)

SALLY is a gorgeous medium sable GSD who is unusally petite.  She's a terrific youngster who has already seen way too much terror in her short life.   Dumped at a high kill rural pound along with two other dogs, by a man who calls himself a trainer, all the dogs exhibited clear signs of being badly used.  One was so terrified he bit a man in the parking lot and was immediately killed.  Because this so-called trainer had not gotten any of the dogs vaccinated, the dog's head was then sent off for a rabies test.  R.I.P., poor boy!  May you  have a far better life at the Bridge than you ever did with this man.   The other two dogs were also terrified but did not lash out.   A GSD lover in the area happened to see Sally and called us.  She was so afraid that poor Sally couldn't be saved and hoped she could be "rehabilitated."

We immediately said of course we would take her.  The description of Sally cowering in the back of a kennel in a pound that would instantly euthanize her was more than we could stomach.  So even though we were beyond full, we squeezed her in.

And are we grateful we were able to!  Sally is one of THE sweetest, most unassuming German Shepherds you'll ever meet!   Although scared of everything at first in her foster home, she related instantly to the other dogs.  She assumed a crouching posture with everything and everyone for the first few days, and had to be literally forced to come out of her kennel even to play with the other dogs.  She had clearly been ABUSED by the man who dumped her to die - if you accidentally raised a hand she dropped to the floor and shook.

But with lots of love and a just a little patience -- and tons of play time with the other dogs -- Sally was quickly in the swing of things.  Although it will take some time for her to feel completely comfortable with all new situations, Sally was about 80% of the way there within a few weeks.  In 2 weeks time she was at a huge adoption event and had a blast!  She and her best buddy Trinka (also a sable, who looked like Trinka's big sister) romped and played and bowed til they wore themselves out.

Sally got her happy ending:  a wonderful home with a huge yard and a doggie sister to play with.  And she got that home within 3 weeks of coming into our rescue.  "Rehab-able" indeed!  So few people understand behavior that is less than "perfect".  And dogs like Sally are killed by the thousands every day around this country because of it.

We are grateful Sally came to us and that she so quickly found a great forever home.
We pray for all those like Sally who are not so fortunate.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
