About Roxie (in 2012)

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: 350.00
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Black with Tan, Yellow or Fawn
  • Current Age: 13 Years 6 Months (best estimate)

ROXIE is a gorgeous bi-color German Shepherd who was thrown away by her owners in western Kansas. She is on the smaller size but still has a lot of growing to do. At only 8 months old, she was already “old news” – no longer a tiny, cuddly puppy but a gangly teenager.  So when she ended up in the pound they told the pound "keep her, we don't want her".

Roxie is doing very well in her foster home. She is incredibly intelligent and is eager to please.  Roxie does not like to be left in her crate while the foster parents are away - she will break out unless the crate is bullet-proof. She does fine if left out (as long as shoes are picked up off of the floor and you are willing to deal with a few potty accidents - after all she is still a puppy!).  Her forever home will need patience during the house-breaking period while she learns the rules of the house.

Roxie is untrained because of course her original owners did not bother to train her. She will need basic obedience training at a minimum, and a leader to correct her appropriately when she gets out of line. Roxie's bark does not match her size - she can easily scare off people. As with all german shepherds she will need constant socialization with people (trips to petsmart, the dog park, etc.) to ensure she will be comfortable around strangers. With the right introductions to people in controlled settings she does fabulous. She just needs leadership and someone who will teach her how to behave in public.  From what we have seen thus far, Roxie reacts more favorably to women than men. But it only takes 10 or 15 minutes after being introduced before she loves anyone to pieces!

It is apparent that Roxie had little to no walks in her previous home. Her foster home is teaching her how to walk correctly on a leash. She is catching on quickly but she has TONS of energy and wants to pull very hard on a leash. She is a smaller german-shepherd but is very strong! Consistent walks with a gentle leader, harness, or other method are a must. She is responding very well to corrections on walks.

Roxie has all the gangliness of an 8 month old and will fill out into a gorgeous adult.   All she needs is the training and leadership that any German Shepherd requires, and she will love you for life. This sweet pup just needs a forever home where she knows she’s there for life and will never be thrown away again!  She also has a beautiful gait – watching her trot is like watching a champion Tennessee Walking Horse.

DOGS:   When properly introduced, Roxie does well around other dogs. She lives with a male and female german shepherd in the foster home. She is playful and respectful of the other dogs, but will let them know if they are being too rough. When on walks Roxie gets very anxious when she sees other dogs. After being introduced to other dogs properly she is a sweet-heart who just wants to play. It is important that her future home socialize her with other dogs outside of their home.

CATS:    yes.   Showed little interested in the caged cats in the boarding facility.  Was more interested in nearby food.  Would probably chase a strange cat in the yard, just as she would probably chase a rabbit or squirrel.

KIDS:     we haven’t seen her around small children but believe she would be fine.  She’s simply still a puppy at only 8 months old and although she’s getting big she’s still rambunctious and loves to jump up on people. Play with small children would have to be supervised to be sure it doesn’t get too rambunctious.

IDEAL HOME:   an active, loving home that will take the time to play with her, give her leadership, and love her with all their hearts.

If you're looking for a beautiful, sweet youngster
who will love you, love life, and be your lifetime companion --
ROXIE is your girl!

ROXIE's ADOPTION FEE: $350
This fee covers only part what we spend on vet and boarding costs for the dogs we save.  At minimum it includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming, monthly heartworm and flea preventives, and microchip.  In many cases it also includes surgery and various types of vet treatment for standard issues such as hot spots, ear infections and so on.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
