About SUMMER

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: 250.00
  • Species: Dog
  • General Color: Black with Tan, Yellow or Fawn
  • Current Age: 13 Years 10 Months (best estimate)

SUMMER is an utterly gorgeous and very sweet shepherd-collie mix.  Her elegant face and frame look like Lassie, her coloring is Rin Tin Tin, and her personality is both collie and shepherd.  She gets along great with other dogs and all people, is incredibly smart and also likes to do her own thing.  She has a beautiful, silky coat that you’ll love to run your fingers through and a gorgeous feathery tail -- and when you walk in she comes running to greet you, get some loving and ask what you want to do now!

Summer is one of tens of thousands of throw-away pets in southern Missouri, where puppymills and stray/abandoned/dumped dogs and cats are everywhere.   She’s fortunate she made it out and we want her to have 100% security, safety and love for the rest of her life.  We’re looking for her perfect, forever family

Summer is so sweet that she can literally walk into virtually any situation and instantly adjust to get along with the other animals.  She doesn’t seem to know a stranger when it comes to humans.   She also seems to be housetrained.

Summer is almost a perfect dog:  loving, sweet, gentle and fun.  She's “almost” perfect because she has one interesting habit:  she loves, loves, loves to roam!   She’s an adventurous dog who loves get out and go visiting!   She was in a temporary foster home for a few weeks, but kept getting out and going to visit the neighbors.  The good news is that when she went visiting, the neighbors all fell in love with how sweet she is and wished they could keep her themselves!!

For her own safety -- the foster family lived near a busy highway -- we put Summer back in boarding.  SUMMER’S NEW FAMILY MUST HAVE A SECURELY FENCED BACKYARD WITH A 6 FT. PRIVACY FENCE.   She is VERY good at finding any hole or low spot in a fence!  At her temporary foster home, she used the railing of a raised deck that was the same height as the top of the 6 ft fence to launch herself over and out.  When they fixed it so she couldn’t get on the deck, Summer went to an outdoor patio where the fence was only 4 ft high and a chair sat next to the fence -- and made her escape by jumping up on the chair and over. Summer is an incredibly smart dog and would make a great companion for someone who likes to hike, camp, do agility work, or similar.  She will also make one lucky family an incredible family dog.

DOGS:   yes.  She’s in doggie daycare at boarding.  Lived temporarily with a small pug mix and an Aussie puppy and did great
CATS:   Summer has a high prey drive and likes to chase them. The foster home is currently working with her to teach her how to behave around cats.

KIDS:     she was in foster care with kids 12 and over, and did great.  We haven’t seen her around small children but believe she would be just as good.
IDEAL HOME:   an active, loving home that will take the time to play with her and love her with all their hearts. A HOME WITH A SECURE 6 FOOT PRIVACY FENCED YARD AND NO WAY TO ESCAPE!

If you're looking for an elegant, gorgeous dog
who’s both loving and adventurous,
SUMMER is your girl!

SUMMER's ADOPTION FEE: $250

More about SUMMER

Good with Dogs

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
