More Information:

STAR is a gorgeous cream and black German Shepherd. She is young, beautiful, very loving -- and longing desperately for her very own forever home where she can ben an inside dog and a loved member of the family!!!

In her video you can see how bonded she was with the family memer who surrendered her.

Star was given as a puppy to a family member.  Unfortunately, she was forced to be an outdoor dog 24/7 and lived in the backyard while two small dogs lived indoors.  This set up a very bad dynamic where Star was excluded from the comforts of the house and the company of her family, and the small dogs were clearly the favorites.  The only bright spot for Star was the weekly visit from another family member who spent time with her, taught her a few commands, and walked her.  This visiting family member loved Star and cared for her the best he could.

Unfortunately, one day the humans failed to make sure the back door latched securely.  The two small dogs were on the inside of the glass door, Star was on the outside of the glass door.  The dogs were facing each other when the small male dog pushed the door open and Star greeted him happily.  But then the small female dog - who was elderly and frail - went right up to Star and started barking and snarling at her.  Star grabbed the small dog in her mouth but then instantly dropped her at the shouted command of the visiting family member.  Star literally had the small dog in her mouth for only a few seconds and did not hurt this elderly female (there were no wounds or even marks of any kind).  Sadly, though, the elderly small dog passed away from an apparent heart attack.

Star's family blamed her, said she had to go, and took her to a local pound, where kind staff members were moved by Star's plight and called us for help.

Star has been in boarding ever since (due to a severe shortage of people willing to foster dogs).  She is lonely and confused, having gone from being outdoors 24/7 to indoors in a large run 23 hours a day.  She has a very large run at the boarding facility and staff are wonderful to her, exercising her in the play yard several times a day.  BUT THIS IS NO LIFE FOR STAR!  SHE'S BEEN LEFT OUT IN THE COLD AND HEAT ALL HER LIFE, DEPRIVED OF THE HUMAN LOVE SHE SO CRAVES -- AND SHE DESERVES THE BEST HOME OUT THERE AFTER ALL SHE'S BEEN THROUGH.  We intend to see she gets it.

Star is very loving and will bond quickly to a loving family.  She wants to please her people and is simply a German Shepherd in search of a human leader who will teach her the rules and show her the joys of living indoors as a family member!  She is scary smart and will learn quickly - she is very good at "stay" and knows several basic commands taught to her by the visiting family member.  She keeps her kennel pretty clean so we believe will learn housetraining very quickly.

Star can live with other dogs as long as the owners are willing to teach her appropriate interactions and exercise appropriate oversight as she learns the rules.

KIDS:   unconfirmed, but believe she would be good.  Only issue is likely her size and being young/rambunctious around very small kids.  Needs to be tested.

OTHER DOGS:   Any adopter needs to remember that Star did take the small, elderly, frail dog in her mouth when the small dog started a confrontation.  So she will not run from a confrontation.  Will probably be fine living with other dogs so long as the owners are strong canine leaders and willing to exercise constant oversight in dog interactions for however long it takes Star to understand all the rules of dog-to-dog behavior.

CATS:   unknown.  Would have to be tested.

If you're looking for a beautiful young girl
who wants to please you, love you and be part of a real family --
and just needs good leadership --
STAR will be your lifetime love and companion.

STAR's ADOPTION FEE:  $300
This fee covers only part of what we spend to vet and board the dogs we save.  Our average expenses per dog are over $450.  Our adoption fee has been the same since 2005 even though vet fees have doubled.  We are constantly doing fundraising to continue rescuing dogs.  At minimum, the adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, monthly preventives, deworming and microchip.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
