More Information:
LADY CLOE is a tall, elegant and super sweet girl who makes you fall in love the minute you meet her! The only reason she's in rescue is that she has Addison's Disease and her owner can't afford the monthly meds.
Lady C's story is complicated. We don't anything about her history prior to mid-2012, when she was acquired by a woman who decided a few weeks later she didn't want her. She left Lady C with her god-mother, who promptly fell in love with this gorgeous dog. She loves Lady C dearly but (a) is older and can't handle a large dog, and (b) is on a fixed income and can't afford the monthly meds.
Lady C's illness came as a shock to the god-mother. Shortly after arriving, Lady C became quite ill, quit eating, and lost a lot of weight. Vet tests revealed she has Addison's Disease, which is easily controlled with monthly meds. The only problem is that they aren't cheap: close to $200 a month.
The original call for help came from a vet, who told us a client had a new dog with Addison's Disease and was going to euthanize her due to the finances. We immediately took take Lady C into our program and the vet not only graciously worked with us to get Lady C well from the crisis, but also agreed to give us her monthly shots at cost (approx. $150).
So Lady C is a special needs dog, due to the expense of her monthly meds. We are still researching Addison's Disease since we've not dealt with it before, but it appears that it's easily controlled with the right meds. The monthly shot combined with a tiny amount of prednisone given daily, regulate the dog's system and the dog is fine. The other good news is that once Lady C is completely stabilized, the vet believes the shots can be gradually moved back to every 6 weeks. This would make a significant difference in the cost.
WE KNOW THIS IS COSTLY, BUT BOY IS LADY C WORTH IT! WOW! Not only is she a stunningly beautiful dog, but she just inspires a sense of well-being and sweetness almost from the minute you meet. Our volunteer said "She's just soo ... sooo ... SWEET!" She was calm in the vet's office (the pictures) and adjusted almost instantly to meeting us (after a good GSD bark, of course!).
She's a big girl and will probably weigh 85 lbs when she recovers full weight. She's a plush coat GSD and her coat is silky. She rides well in the car and did very nicely on the leash. She gets along with other animals, though she's nobody's fool. Another dog at the vet's office lunged at her and she let him know that if he did come at her she wouldn't back off.
DOGS: We tested her with another female GSD and after a few minutes of raised hackles all was fine. She was also fine with a dachshund.
CATS: She clearly wanted to play with the cat, but at her size and energy level it was too much. We think she can be trained to respect a cat and will need training in that area.
KIDS: She loved the grandkids in our volunteer's house (ranging from about 5 - 15).
ITEM OF NOTE: Lady got out of her owner's yard when a gate was left open, but came back shortly asking to be let in. Her adopter must be aware that she's a true German Shepherd and needs great leadership, but is overall a super sweet and terrific dog.
IDEAL HOME: fenced yard with a fairly active family and a family who will commit to her lifelong meds for Addison's Disease.
If you're looking for a heart-dog
and are in a position to afford Lady C's lifelong medical maintenance,
you will have one heck of a gorgeous and sweet loyal companion to show for it!
LADY CLOE's ADOPTION FEE: $300
This fee covers only part of the vet and boarding expenses for the dogs we save. At minimum it includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies, distemper/parvo and bordatella vaccinations, deworming and microchip.
