More Information:

Lacey was dumped by her owners at a kill shelter in the city.  They alternated between saying what a good dog she is and what a pain in the neck she is .... and since she has fly strike on her ears (an indicator that a dog is left outdoors most or all of the time), we're guessing that the "pain in the neck" part was the responsibility of having a dog - the need to walk, feed and play with her.

Which is even sadder because Ms. Lacey appears to be an almost-perfect dog!   She's young and energetic, but not too energetic.  She settles down nicely in the house.  She gets along with the other dogs and is in a foster home with a chi-weenie she just wants to play with.  She's perfect on leash now that she's out of the shelter and the vet, and isn't pulling.  She responds immediately to instructions and a firm "no".  Within 24 hrs she knew where her kennel was and goes into that room to patiently wait to be told to kennel.  She will wait at the door for you to tell her it's ok for her to go out (humans ALWAYS need to go before the dog).   She will be easy to train  - she's smart, eager to please, and responsive.

Lacey has just been spayed and so is not quite up to full speed yet, and we may see her exhibit a higher energy level after she's fully recovered.  But the foster mom's observation after just two days was:  "She's an almost-perfect dog!"

KIDS:   hdid fine around small kids at adoption events, currently in foster home with a 12 yr old.

DOGS:  currently in foster care with a chi-weenie, and has done well at adoption events with dogs of all sizes.  May be too over-the-top on first meeting, wanting to instantly play with a strange dog.   She will  need to be trained on this.

CATS:  unknown.  Did not react to cats at the shelter.  Would have to be tested.

ITEM OF NOTE:  None that we know of right now.  Has not shown any inclination so far to jump, dig, escape, etc.  When let outdoors goes inmmediately to the gate and acts like she's waiting to go out of it.  But when told to come, she instantly responds.  May be that her previous owners let her out from their backyard....

If you're looking for a TERRIFIC dog
who's almost perfect already and just needs
"finishing school",

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
