More Information:
Imagine seven 6-week old German Shepherd puppies, dying of starvation and worms.
Imagine seven tiny newborns born outdoors with no shelter in early March.
Imagine seven puppies with no food other than their mother's milk and their own feces.
They were confiscated during a drug raid (the police killed the parents) and lived in a filthy outdoor pen their entire lives. The owners bred German Shepherds and English Bulldogs to make a few extra bucks, and were well known to local officials. ALL THE PUPPIES WERE LITERALLY STARVED. The largest was only 6 lbs. The smallest weighed a mere 4.2 lbs. Normal 6 week old GSD puppies weigh 2 to 3 times that much. The pups suffered from extreme malnutrition and massive worm infestations. We treated them all immediately for worms and began giving them nutritious food. Sadly, despite a blood transfusion, the smallest puppy died in our arms several days later.
The puppies expelled massive mounds of wriggling worms after we dewormed them - 6 lb puppies with hundreds of worms up to 6" long. In all our years of rescue we've never seen such an infestation. It was sickening and infuriating. The puppies were never dewormed, had lived on their own feces and vomit, were filthy, stunk, and had coats that looked like brillo pads. It took us two weeks to break them of the habit of pouncing on piles of poop / spit up to devour it.
In addition, the puppies clearly did not know what a kind human hand was. When we walked into their midst, they hid in corners, terror in their eyes and bodies hunched in anticipation of who-knows-what. Normal puppies will crawl all over you asking for attention. These pups ran the other way in fear.
It's clear the pups never knew love, never had food, never got vet care, were not socialized. Yet they were to be sold on Craig's List to make a few extra bucks.
After several weeks of CONSTANT work and correction, the pups are coming around and starting to want human attention. Even the shyest pup is now asking for attention. They are getting past their food aggression (though this is a work in progress), and are already past the desperate need to devour their own feces and vomit. The work of the dedicated, faithful foster parents has been incredible -- they have literally worked with the pups 24/7, correcting and guiding and loving them. Most of the pups now give kisses to their foster family, tho they're still shy of strangers. That too will change in the next few weeks with continued care.
NOTE: We believe the puppies parents were likely very strong German Shepherds, trained by the drug bust owners to be very protective. It is likely that they were strong-willed and strong-headed dogs. THE PUPPIES WILL ONLY BE ADOPTED TO EXPERIENCED FAMILIES. THE NEW OWNERS MUST UNDERSTAND GERMAN SHEPHERDS AND BE OUTSTANDING CANINE LEADERS. THESE PUPPIES ALL SEEM TO BE STRONG-WILLED, TRUE GERMAN SHEPHERDS WHO WILL BE A HANDFUL WHILE GROWING UP. NEW FAMILIES MUST BE ABLE LOVINGLY LEAD, GUIDE AND TRAIN THE PUPPIES AND HELP THEM SET ASIDE THEIR AWFUL PAST.
