More Information:

BARLEY (aka "Buck") is one of the nicest young guys you'll ever meet!  His foster family says "he's the best!"  He's a lover -- he loves you, loves others, just plain loves people and wants to play.  He seems to get along fine with other dogs, cats are unknown and would have to be tested.  We haven't seen him around young children yet but believe he will be a wonderful playmate and companion.  Barley is just sort of a big goofball -- young, full of life, full of energy, just wants to love and be loved!!!!  Just look at that face - he's one of those dogs who just make you grin ;-)  We believe he's a soft-eared GSD who came from a poor breeder.

In addition to being adorable, Barley is super smart -- just watch his video, which was taken 3 days after arriving at his foster home.  In just a few days he had already learned commands like sit, out, and a few others.  He will be easily trained -- he's eager to please and to learn!

Which is all the more remarkable because he's had a rough time.  He was a stray and so starved that his hip bones stuck out and so did every other bone in his body.   He was rail thin and would desperately search for any sign of even a tiny piece of food.  He was in a high kill shelter where he got basic maintenance rations and just couldn't get rid of the empty feeling in his stomach.  But now he's finally starting to fill up in a wonderful foster home (where they adore him).

Barley is very food driven (no surprise since he was 25 lbs underweight).  His foster home does not have any other animals so we haven't seen him around other animals when  food/treats are present, but we strongly recommend caution when giving him food or treats around other animals.  Starved animals often will exhibit some initial food aggression and/or protectiveness until they adjust to the fact that there will always be food available.  If his new family has other animals it is best to feed them separately at first, and then gradually transition to the point where the animals can be in the same room together with food.

This gorgeous guy is one heck of a sweetie, a great buddy, companion and family member!

If you're looking for a gorgeous young sweetheart of a guy
who thinks he's a lap dog and will love you to death,
Barley's your boy!!!

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
