  • Current Age: 15 Years 11 Months (best estimate)

MARI is the cutest little 45 lb package of prancing play!  One ear frequently flops over while the other one always stands up, which gives her an adorable quizzical look.  And when she looks you in the eye ... your heart melts.  She has the cutest prancing walk you'll ever see, and when she's running with abandon she looks like joy in motion.

But don't let that joy fool you:  she's had a rough time.  We literally pulled her off the side of a cliff - in 10" of snow in between snowstorms.  She had been wandering the streets for at least 6 months with a giant white german shepherd (Cliff), and they finally squatted in a tumbledown old shed belonging to a kind woman who left food out for them.  Both dogs were emaciated, missing a lot of their fur, and heartworm positive.  But together they had managed to survive, and on that bitter cold January day their nightmare came to an end.

Mari and Cliff were a bonded pair and went through a lot together.  She pranced and danced around him while playing, and Cliff gently inserted himself between Mari and any perceived threat to protect her.  They were a remarkable pair.  We'll never know how they hooked up, but he protected his little Mari right up until he was adopted - and in return Mari lightened life for gentle giant Cliff with her play and happiness.   Once Cliff got adopted, Mari made great friends with several other dogs at the boarding kennel.  Every day she got better at being comfortable around humans.  Now she's in a wonderful foster home and is enjoying home life no end!  She adores her GSD foster brother and they play and romp for hours.   Mari needs a home with an active family and another dog or two!

A NOTE FROM MARI: Hi, my name is Mari. I am about 3 years old I think and weigh 45 lbs.  I have been in my foster home for a few months now and am getting more comfortable every day.  At first I was not sure if this was a safe place but now I will let people pet me and will even take treats from your hand if I am comfortable.  I think I might have been a princess in a previous life.  I feel most comfortable sitting on a perch that is above floor level to look over my subjects.  My foster brother Kane and I love to play and wrestle. I think it's best if my forever home has another doggie sibling as I feel most comfortable around my fellow canines initially.  They teach me who I can trust.  I would do best in a home with older children or no children. I am still nervous around small children.  I will also need a home with a secure 6 foot fence because I am an escape artist.  I love to go on runs and walks.  I follow your lead and never pull on my leash so walking me is a dream!

OTHER DOGS:  definitely - MUST be in a home with at least one other dog
CATS:  unknown, would have to be tested
KIDS:  We recommend a family with no young children (very high noise levels and lots of sudden movement scares Mari).

IDEAL HOME:  a stable home, somewhat calm, with a securely fenced yard and at least one other dog.  Mari would LOVE an active family as she has excellent energy!

Are you the loving heart that will help Mari take the final steps of her journey?
Teach her the final secrets of love and trust?
MARI will be your pride and joy once you do!

MARI's ADOPTION FEE:  $200
This fee covers only part of the vet and boarding expenses for the dogs we save.  At minimum it includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies, distemper/parvo and bordatella vaccinations, deworming and microchip.  In Mari's case, we have also paid to board Mari for 11 months at a boarding kennel!

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
