RANGER is an XL sable boy who turns heads wherever he goes and is truly stunning!  He's a big boy at 129 lbs, but is currently trying to trim down to about 105 lbs to be at his elegant best.

TEMPERAMENT
Ranger is a blend of playful, loving GSD and serious GSD.  He's stubborn but loving, doesn't like leashes but loves car rides and outdoor time, and welcomes strangers so long as his people do but doesn't like the UPS guy.  He has a toy box and loves to play with his toys, especially playing ball.  However, he's not obsessive about it. He has previously been allowed on the furniture and loves to jump on the couch and snuggle, get pets, and give kisses.  He also loves to watch TV when there are other dogs on and will leave his pawprints on the TV as he tries to figure out where the other dog is.  He has good house manners, and is house trained and kennel trained.  He often sleeps in his kennel with the door open during the day.  (He does have one kennel peculiarity - he does not like to have the top or sides of the kennel touched and will react protectively, though you can freely touch the front and door.)   He also has a prey drive for little critters like squirrels, rabbits, etc. so will likely keep your yard free of them.  He knows a few commands such as 'sit', and will be easily trained to respond to other commands such as 'wait.'

OTHER DOGS
He has lived with a standard-sized female GSD who is actually 'the boss of him' and tolerates it well.  He would not tolerate another dominant male.  NO SMALL DOGS - he cannot be around them without considering them prey.  CATS:  he has lived with indoor cats and does well, though he still sometimes wants to play with them.  He would most likely consider a cat running free outdoors as prey. He can be an only dog or live with a large, well-tempered female dog.

KIDS
He can only be around older kids 12 and up.  He cannot be around small kids, as he sometimes gets irritated and reacts by putting his mouth on the child.  His owners are giving him up for this reason -- they have small grandchildren who now live close by, visit often, and there have been several incidents in which Ranger nipped/bit at the kids.  If he is ever around small kids in an unavoidable situation, he MUST be 100% supervised and on leash.

HEALTH
He's somewhat overweight right now, but is otherwise is good health.

OVERALL
Ranger is a truly magnificent large male GSD who has the potential to be your BFF for life!  He's loving, playful and has some adorable habits like watching TV.  He also needs a strong canine  leader who will teach him leash manners, and create structure and routine so that he understands rules and boundaries.  Do that and he will be your best snuggle buddy for life and turn heads everywhere you go!

If you're looking for a mature and head-turningly handsome German Shepherd
who will love you forever,
RANGER may be your new BFF!

Good with Dogs, Good with Cats, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
