Gorgeous CONAN was an abandoned dog who chose the right people to walk up to!  These kind people took him in but eventually found that while they love him, they’re simply not equipped for a German Shepherd.

And Conan is a typical German Shepherd youngster!  He’s definitely energetic and needs daily exercise, including both playtime and a walk.  He sometimes jumps on people in his excitement, but stays off the furniture (good boy!).  He occasionally tries to pull things off the table, but a quick spritz with a water bottle and he quickly learns “no”!  He’s a smart cookie, and his training should be easily completed with consistency and time.  Conan is still a puppy and needs an active household where he can have something to do!

Conan is crate trained and house broken.  He’s good with children (has lived with children), and just needs continued reinforcement of what he has already learned (to play gently, not to mouth, etc).  As a big, young, enthusiastic dog, he may still get too enthusiastic during play, and as with all big dogs such play should always be supervised!

He used to chew things up but is mostly past the chewing stage – he actually learned quickly not to tear things up.  He was easily trained not to chew with a firm “no” and the substitution of a bone.

Conan sleeps in his crate at night and does fine.  But the minute he hears you stirring in the morning, he whines to join you.  Conan now knows “sit” and is being taught by his foster family to “shake” when he is fed.  Conan is crated when everyone is gone, as he is not yet mature enough to be left alone and bored in a house.

Conan is fine with other dogs (lived with one) and loves to play.  Cats are unknown and would need to be tested.

We think that Conan’s original owners were unkind, perhaps even abusive, to Conan.  He’s generally fine but occasionally cowers with both his foster parents.  His training will need to continue in a firm voice, but one that is low rather than loud so he doesn’t mistake the meaning.  In a matter of months, we believe he’ll be past all cowering or ducking, and won’t even remember the bad old days!

As his foster family says “It just took him some time to adjust and learn the rules of the house.  He’s really a great dog!  Very sweet!”

If you want a guy who’s both handsome and sweet,
consider CONAN!!!

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
