More Information:

STORMY is a heck of a great dog -- if you're looking for an incredibly smart dog with lots of energy to be active with you, STORMY's your guy.

In most ways STORMY is almost the perfect dog  -- he gets along with other dogs and with cats, is housebroken and crate-trained, and is great in the house when left alone (doesn't destroy anything).  He doesn't dig or jump fences. He's perfect in the house, does not get on furniture, doesn't destroy or chew up things, and never has accidents.    He also knows tons of commands, such as speak, twist, jump, leave it, jump through the hoop, and play dead!

He would be perfect for someone without children who likes to run and exercise and play. He is intelligent and active -- and needs the structure and activity of something to do - for instance, as your running companion, doing agility work, etc.  He loves to figure things out, chase water hoses, play fetch, dodge, chase squirrels and run and play.  He also loves to be brushed and pampered.

STORMY was with his family since a puppy, but the family recently went through a divorce and due to a change in work schedules Stormy was not getting enough exercise.  The household was also chaotic due to the changes and Stormy's world went topsy-turvy.  Stormy is a dog who is intelligent and energetic (he is a Husky/German Shepherd after all!!!)  He MUST have structure, exercise, leadership, guidance and something to do!  If you're a good canine leader and active, Stormy may be your perfect companion and buddy.

STORMY has lived with children and with training did well until the recent family changes.  But he is now reacting poorly to strange children in the house (i.e., visiting friends of the family's children).   He does not like them to approach him and hug him, or be too familiar with him.  Like so many GSDs and huskies, he needs to be ignored at first meeting (proper procedure with a dog at any rate).  He is simply not a dog to be approached and "loved on" by a stranger.  Like most GSD's, he needs to know that YOU are the one in charge, that you will not invade his space, and that if and when he chooses to approach you, you may or may not be interested in petting/playing with him.

For this reason, Stormy would be best in a home where there will be no visiting children under 14 -- or where his interaction with such visiting children will be strictly controlled (i.e., Stormy will be in his crate or the visiting children will be prevented from treating him like a golden retriever).  He is fine with his own family's children, but can not be left unattended with strange children.

Stormy is very protective of his family and without good leadership may become overly protective when others are in the house around his family.  Again, this is part of his need for strong canine leadership:  he needs someone who will remind him what appropriate protection behaviors really are.

Stormy is simply a very smart dog who requires good leadership and respectful enforcement of respectful rules.

If you're looking for a handsome dog
that's past the puppy chewing stage,
but will be active with you as well as your best friend/protector for life,
STORMY's your boy.

Stormy’s adoption fee is $200.00.

This fee covers a portion of the vet and boarding expenses for the dogs we save.  It includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies, distemper/parvo and bordatella vaccinations, deworming and microchip.

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
