CARRIE ("Caroline") is the Betty Grable of German Shepherds - a gorgeous gal with looong legs!!!  She's a beautiful dog in search of someone who will not desert her like her last owner!

Carrie first came to us in late 2009 from the AR-OK border region, a hellhole for animals.  She was scared and uncertain, but gradually warmed up to humans and started trusting us.  In January of 2010 we adopted her to a family in southern Missouri.  But less than 2 years later, in October 2012, we got a call from the police in a small northern Missouri town saying they'd found Carrie running free - more than 5 hours drive away from her adopter's hometown!  Our frantic calls and emails to the adopter to find out what happened, yielded nothing.  All were disconnected or just rang and rang with no answer and no voicemail.  The adopter never bothered to even contact us and let us know she was missing.  This leads us to wonder if they actually just dumped this poor girl by the side of the road one day!!!

Caroline is more scared now than she was when we first got her back in 2009.  We don't know what happened in that adoptive home, but it clearly was not appropriate.  We know Carrie is a bit of an escape artist and got away from the family twice, and we're guessing that the family got frustrated and began either cooping her up or just tossed her outside and ignored her.  We cry to think of what she went through.  Even though we require adopters to go through a rigorous application and home visit process, clearly this was a bad home for any dog other than a "perfect" dog!!!!

We immediately drove to the small northern Missouri town and picked Carrie up.  She was terrified and very shy.  And unfortunately due to a lack of people willing to foster, we had to put her in boarding, which is not helping her any.  Carrie desperately needs to get into a home where she can settle in, know kindness once again, and come out of the shell that her former owner made worse.  She was so full of life and pizzazz -- and it breaks our hearts to see it.

CARRIE DESPERATELY NEEDS A PATIENT AND LOVING FOSTER HOME WHO WILL WORK WITH HER.  Previously Carrie would be ok with some dogs but not others.  Now we're seeing signs that she may need to be an only pet.  Definitely no cats.  We do recommend a home with no other dogs also,

OTHER DOGS:  needs a single pet home
CATS:    no
KIDS:    older kids only
IDEAL HOME:  a calm, quiet, single-pet home with tons of love and patience who will understand Carrie's trauma and what she's been through

CARRIE's ADOPTION FEE:  $300
This fee covers a portion of the vet and boarding expenses for the dogs we save.  It includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies, distemper/parvo and bordatella vaccinations, deworming and microchip.

Not Good with Cats, Good with Adults

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
