About Sissy aka 'Luna' (12-10)

  • Status: Adopted!
  • Adoption Fee: $200.00
  • Species: Dog
  • Current Age: 15 Years (best estimate)

SISSY (aka Luna) is a beautiful medium-sized girl who is part Belgian Mal, part German Shepherd, and part …..?  She’s a gorgeous little girl with a beautiful coat, lots of young dog energy, and a loving, playful nature.

She was originally found at Christmas time in the median of a busy roadway.  She was emaciated, starving and scrounging for something, anything to eat.  She was only 6 months old, weighed a mere 25 lbs and was scared to death. She had clearly been abused, shied away and shook at a raised hand, and had the saddest eyes ever. She broke everyone’s heart.

She was soon adopted to a family who were fully aware that Sissy needed both training and extensive ongoing socialization.  They agreed to provide this, and promised to do just as the rescue instructed.   They did not.  They promised Sissy her life and then failed her.  The rescue discovered, too late, that in reality they did nothing to train her and instead allowed her to become inappropriately protective.   Instead of taking her to the trainer as they promised (and even assured the rescue they had), they did not.  They had her a year, decided they didn’t want to keep her due to her problems, and only then did they take her for one session with the trainer.  They lied – and put Sissy’s life at risk in the process.

So Sissy has been in our care for months now – a loving, lively, adorable young lady who also still distrusts some strangers and will react strongly by lunging at them.  Aside from her “stranger danger” issue with certain people, she’s an incredibly loving and fun little girl!!!  She ADORES playing with other dogs and must be in a home with another dog large enough to allow exuberant play.  She loves attention, petting, cuddling and all the normal young dog things.  She’s just over 2 years old and a truly beautiful girl.

SUMMARY: Sissy’s a beautiful and loving little girl whose first 6 months of life weren’t kind to her, and the next year was spent with a family who failed her by not socializing and training her as promised.  She’s now been in boarding for many months and while she loves playing with the other dogs and the kennel staff, she desperately needs a home of her own.  She is still scared of new things and experiences but is much better than she used to be.  She can be scared of men and we believe men must have abused her, most likely a teenage boy.  Sissy has made good progress but still needs TLC, patience and lots of love to overcome what others have done to her.  She is still a “project dog” – but one that is SO worth the time and effort!!!

Are YOU the right person to win Sissy’s love and eternal trust?
To help her past her final issues around strangers?
She’ll reward you with undying devotion and a lifetime of love.

DOGS:   definitely!  MUST be in a home with at least one other dog large enough to play with exuberance
CATS:   tends to chase, would need a strong leader to train her
KIDS:     older children only
IDEAL HOME:   an active family with another dog who will understand her history and patiently socialize, socialize, socialize Sissy, exposing her constantly to new situations and people until she gets past her distrust of certain strangers.  A family who will understand that she can be unpredictable around some strangers and must be supervised at first around new people.

If you're looking for a beautiful smaller girl
who is adorable, playful and loving,
and are willing to mentor and socialize her to get past her “stranger danger”,
SISSY may be your girl!

SISSY's ADOPTION FEE:   $250
This fee covers only part of what we spend on vetting and boarding the dogs we save, and has not changed in 7 years despite dramatic hikes in vet and boarding prices.  Our average cost per dog is now over $450.   At minimum your adoption fee includes the dog's spay/neuter, heartworm test, heartworm treatment if needed, rabies shot, distemper/parvo shot, bordatella shot, deworming and microchip.  In many cases it also includes surgery, bloodwork, X-rays, and treatment and medications for conditions such as thyroid, ear infections, eye problems, skin conditions and many others.

Good with Dogs, Good with Kids

STOP!! READ THIS BEFORE YOU GO ANY FURTHER!

  1. We're picky about our adopters.
  2. Are you sure you're up to having a GSD?  They're not for everyone.  They take a lot of time, effort, training.  They shed year round.  They're big.  They scare lots of people.  They "mouth" and herd.  They're usually strong-willed and stubborn.  You have to have references and a home visit.  If you're not willing or able to deal with any of this, please don't waste your time or ours applying.
  3. Will the dog be an inside family pet? We do not adopt to outdoor-only homes. All dogs must be indoor dogs.
  4. Do you leave your dog outdoors when you're not home?   We do not adopt to homes that leave their animals outside when they're gone.  You must put your dogs indoors when you're gone.  A 3 yr old adopted MOGS dog died when the owners went to run errands, left her outdoors, the gate was somehow opened, and she was hit by a car.  Tragic and 100% preventable. Even privacy fences get broken into.  Gates are opened.  Thieves steal dogs. Never leave your dog outdoors when you're not home!!
  5. What's your plan for unexpected events and major changes?  New baby? Divorce?  Moving?   How you will provide for your dog if your family breaks up?
  6. Will you make a lifetime commitment?  It's your responsibility to keep your dog safe, loved and cared for FOR LIFE.
  7.  Do you understand we expect you to keep that lifetime commitment?  It's YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to stick by your family member -- no matter what.
  8. Are you unable or unwilling to make a lifetime commitment? Do not apply.
